Annual Nikolausmarkt on December 5th around the district town hall on the Stuttgart heights
Degerloch, with around 16,000 inhabitants, is one of Stuttgart's most distinctive districts (Stuttgart city district, state of Baden-Württemberg). Located at an altitude of around 470 m above the Stuttgart valley basin, the district is considered 'the heights' — with a distinguished, bourgeois character, featuring villas, solid shops, and the television tower right on its doorstep. The district council and the Degerloch Trade and Commerce Association (GHV) jointly organize the annual Nikolausmarkt.
The Nikolausmarkt traditionally takes place on December 5th (the day before St. Nicholas Day) from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. — a day market, unlike the multi-day Christmas markets in Stuttgart's city center. The venue is the square around the Degerloch District Town Hall and the adjacent district center — right in the heart of the neighborhood.
The day begins with a ceremonial opening by the District Administrator of Degerloch and the chairman of the GHV. Then, a brass ensemble provides the musical accompaniment, creating the typical pre-Christmas atmosphere. The stalls offer:
The Degerloch Nikolausmarkt is explicitly not a large tourist market — not a competitor to the Stuttgart Christmas Market with its around 280 stalls. It is a neighborhood Nikolausmarkt for Degerloch families, with the character of a district festival where neighbors meet, local businesses present themselves, and the district council engages in conversation with citizens.
The 2026 Nikolausmarkt opens on Saturday, December 5th, at 10:00 a.m. and runs continuously until 6:00 p.m. The ceremonial opening by the District Administrator of Degerloch and the chairman of the Trade and Commerce Association will take place in the morning. Afterward, a brass ensemble from Degerloch music associations will provide the musical accompaniment for the market activities.
The stalls will feature local products from Degerloch's shops and manufacturers, along with classic Advent offerings: mulled wine, children's punch, coffee, homemade cake, bratwurst, and crêpes. The exact list of stalls and the brass program will be announced by the district council in November 2026.
Free admission. Food and drinks at the stalls are priced at standard Advent market rates (mulled wine approx. €3.50, bratwurst approx. €3, cake approx. €3 per slice).
Degerloch is accessible via Stuttgart Stadtbahn lines U 5/U 6/U 7/U 8 (stop Degerloch or Albstraße) and by the funicular from Heslach. It's a 15-minute journey from Stuttgart Main Station. By car, take the B 27 or the A 8 (exit Stuttgart-Degerloch). Parking is available at Albplatz and in the side streets.
