625 Years of Lusatian History
Laubusch was first documented in 1401 — as a small Sorbian village in Lower Lusatia. Six centuries later, the village is a district of Lauta in the Bautzen district and part of the Lusatian Lake District. On December 4, 2026, the association 'Freunde des Kulturhauses Laubusch e.V.' will celebrate the 625th anniversary of its first mention — in the symbolically and historically significant cultural centre at Hauptstraße 10.
Shaped by Lusatian Lignite Mining
Like many places in Lusatia, Laubusch was shaped by lignite mining in the 20th century: the briquette factories, the open-cast mines, the company communities — they economically supported the village while changing its appearance. With the structural changes of recent decades, Laubusch has had to reinvent itself. The Lusatian Lake District with its reclaimed open-cast mine lakes — including the Geierswalde Lake nearby — now provides the backdrop for a cultural and tourist revival.
The Laubusch Cultural Centre — a Listed Landmark
The Laubusch Cultural Centre was built in the 1950s and is now a listed building. It was once the central meeting place of the village — for dances, theatre, assemblies, weddings. Today, it is used by the association 'Freunde des Kulturhauses Laubusch e.V.' for concerts, readings, dance evenings, and anniversaries.
Lauta, Laubusch, and Upper Lusatia
Lauta is located in the Bautzen district, in northern Upper Lusatia on the border with the Görlitz district and the Lusatian Lake District. The town celebrated its 650th anniversary in 2024. The district of Laubusch follows a stage later — its 625th anniversary will be celebrated in December 2026.
