A wine-hiking festival with over 10 stations along a 5 km circular route between Boppard and Spay
The Mittelrheinischer Weinfrühling im Bopparder Hamm has been one of Germany's largest and most popular wine-hiking festivals since 1996. Along a circular route of approximately 5 km between Boppard and Spay, vintners and restaurateurs offer their wines and regional dishes at over 10 stations — a delightful Middle Rhine hike with spectacular views of the Rhine.
On the last Sunday in April — April 26, 2026 — around 12,000 visitors are expected. The Bopparder Hamm is one of Germany's most impressive steep Riesling slopes and provides an unparalleled backdrop for the kick-off of the Middle Rhine wine scene in spring. Starting at 10:30 AM, with a free shuttle bus service.
The Mittelrheinischer Weinfrühling im Bopparder Hamm is one of the most established wine-hiking festivals in Germany and a must-attend event for wine lovers. Since its inception in 1996, the festival has attracted around 12,000 visitors annually from the Middle Rhine, Mosel, Rheingau, and Rhine-Main regions, marking the spring opening of the Boppard wine season.
The venue is the Bopparder Hamm, one of Germany's most spectacular steep Riesling slopes. The Hamm is a pronounced loop of the Rhine with south-facing steep slopes, offering optimal conditions for Riesling — heat retention from the slate, protection from winds by the mountain slopes, and reflection of sunlight from the water surface of the Rhine. Across approximately 75 hectares, some of the most renowned Middle Rhine vineyards grow here: Bopparder Hamm Feuerlay, Engelstein, Mandelstein, Ohlenberg, Hellerstein, and Weingrube. They are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site "Upper Middle Rhine Valley".
The event format is a wine-hiking festival: a 5 km circular route connects the Boppard town center with the upstream village of Spay, leading directly through the vineyards. At over ten stations along the path, vintners from the Bopparder Hamm serve their wines — primarily dry and off-dry Rieslings, but also Spätburgunder and Frühburgunder, Weissburgunder, rosé wines, and sparkling wine. Restaurateurs from Boppard and Spay offer regional specialties at the stations: Flammkuchen, Middle Rhine ham, cheese specialties, quiches, sausages, vegetarian options, and sweets.
The hike itself is moderately challenging — the steep slopes require surefootedness, but the path is well-signposted and can be completed in several hours even by less experienced hikers. The constantly opening views of the Rhine with its castles (Marksburg, Liebenstein, Sterrenberg) and ships are particularly charming. Spring brings the vineyards to life, creating the ideal atmosphere for a wine-hiking festival along with the mild climate of these weeks.
Getting there is made easier by a free shuttle bus that runs between Boppard and Spay, transporting hikers in both directions. This allows every visitor to enjoy the hike at their own pace and in their preferred direction. The event starts at 10:30 AM — an early start is recommended to have time at all stations.
On Sunday, April 26, 2026, the Mittelrheinischer Weinfrühling invites you once again to the vineyards of Bopparder Hamm. From 10:30 AM, visitors can sample wines from Boppard vintners and taste regional specialties at over 10 stations along a circular route of approximately 5 km between Boppard and Spay. With around 12,000 expected visitors, the wine-hiking festival is one of the largest spring wine events on the Middle Rhine. A free shuttle bus runs between the start and end points.
The 2026 edition continues the 30-year tradition of the Mittelrheinischer Weinfrühling. The focus is on the dry and off-dry Rieslings of the Bopparder Hamm — one of Germany's most spectacular steep Riesling slopes — complemented by Spätburgunder and Frühburgunder, Weissburgunder, and sparkling wine from participating vintners.
The hike leads through the UNESCO World Heritage landscape of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, with continuously opening views of the Rhine and its castles. Regional specialties are served alongside the wines at the stations. A free shuttle bus facilitates logistics between Boppard and Spay.
