Practical information — Faasendumzug Lebach
Getting There
Lebach is well-connected: by car via the A1 (Eppelborn exit) or A8 (Lebach exit). By train: Regional-Express to Lebach Hauptbahnhof, then a five-minute walk to the city center. On Faasenddienstag, special trains and buses often run. Travel by public transport is strongly recommended — the city center is closed during the procession.
Admission
The procession is free. Spectators line the streets; the best spots should be secured early.
Tips
Costumes are part of it but not mandatory. A bag for candy is recommended. If bringing children: the roadside is only partially suitable for strollers.
The Procession — Climax of Lebach's Faasend
The CVL Faasendumzug is the crowning glory of every carnival season in Lebach. It is organized by the Carneval Verein Lebach (CVL) e. V., the umbrella organization for Lebach's carnival. Traditionally, the procession takes place on Faasendmontag (Rose Monday) or Faasenddienstag — the exact day of the week varies depending on the club's decision for the season. The parade starts at 2:11 PM in the city center of Lebach in the Saarlouis district.
Who Marches in the Procession
The CVL itself fields several floats and walking groups — guard groups, show dance groups, the council of eleven, the honor guard, and the hussars march along. In addition, there are friendly clubs from all over the Saarland and neighboring Palatinate: carnival clubs, music clubs, fire departments, sports clubs, and schools. Registration is done via the CVL website.
Town Hall Storm — A Foretaste
A few days before the big procession, the traditional Storming of the Lebach Town Hall takes place. At 4:11 PM, jesters storm the town hall, the mayor is symbolically deposed, and hands over the city key to the CVL — a gesture with which Lebach's Faasend officially takes power over the city. Experience shows it to be a colorful spectacle with a large audience.
Saarland's Faasend — Its Own Tradition
In the Saarland, carnival is called Faasend. The tradition is distinct and differs from Rhenish carnival — more down-to-earth, closer to Palatinate Fastnacht, with its own songs, costumes, and customs. Lebach has a particularly active carnival scene; the CVL is the identity-forming club here.
What Characterizes the Procession
The Lebach procession is colorful and exuberant without seeming commercial. Floats with political motifs (often sharp jabs at federal and state politics), themed floats from local clubs, dance groups, music bands — the mix creates the charm. Candy, pralines, and sweets are thrown generously — children should bring bags.
Lebach — Small Town with a Great Faasend Tradition
Lebach has about 19,000 inhabitants and is located in the northern part of the Saarlouis district. The town is a transport hub between Saarbrücken and the Hochwald region. The carnival commitment here goes far beyond Faasenddienstag — starting in autumn, the CVL and friendly clubs organize 'Kappensitzungen' (carnival revues).
