Ten days of Advent market at the Gothic brick cathedral
Fürstenwalde/Spree, the central town in the Oder-Spree district with around 33,000 inhabitants, has one of its identity anchors in St. Mary's Cathedral — a three-nave Gothic hall church from the 14th century with a characteristic brick profile. The cathedral was the bishop's seat of the medieval Diocese of Lebus and remains Fürstenwalde's landmark to this day. The cathedral square in front is the venue for the city's Christmas market.
The Christmas market at the cathedral runs for 10 days — from December 6th to 15th, 2026. This above-average duration makes it one of the longer Christmas markets in Brandenburg (classic city festivals usually only last the Advent weekend). 29 stalls offer handicrafts and mulled wine, with the stage in the center for live performances and concerts.
Live bands, trombone choirs, children's choirs, and small theater performances alternate on the stage. Mulled wine stalls in several versions (classic, white, non-alcoholic for children), fire pits for warming up, bratwurst and potato pancakes, marzipan, stollen, and candied almonds. The stalls' offerings include: ceramics, winter accessories (hats, scarves, gloves), candles, soaps, handmade jewelry, wood carvings.
Variable opening hours depending on the day of the week: Mon–Thu 2 PM–8 PM, Fri 2 PM–10 PM, Sat 12 PM–10 PM, Sun 12 PM–6 PM. This allows the market to cater to both the after-work crowd of locals and the weekend tourist audience from Berlin (Fürstenwalde is reachable in 35–45 minutes from Ostbahnhof by RB35 or RE1).
Those who are in the region anyway (Spreewald, Beeskow, Frankfurt/Oder) can combine a visit to the Christmas market with a walk through the historic old town or a tour along the Spree River. Fürstenwalde is the economic center of the Oder-Spree district and is easily explorable on foot.
The Christmas market utilizes the unique setting at the Gothic St. Mary's Cathedral as a marketing asset: the backdrop of the 14th-century brick church makes the market one of the most atmospheric in Brandenburg. The 10-day duration allows both families from Fürstenwalde to visit multiple times and to attract tourists from Berlin and the region (Frankfurt/Oder, Eisenhüttenstadt).
