Federal Armed Forces Music Competition for Youth Wind Orchestras, Wind Classes, and Big Bands
BwMusix (officially "BW-Musik") is the largest youth music competition organized by the Federal Armed Forces' military music service. The format combines classical competitions with workshops, stage concerts, and musician friendship gatherings — a mix that is considered a benchmark in the German youth music scene. Partners include Yamaha Music Europe and the respective host city; in 2026, Balingen at the foot of the Swabian Jura will be the host.
Over three days, from June 19th to 21st, 2026, youth wind orchestras, wind classes, and big bands will compete against each other at the volksbankmesse Balingen (Auf Stetten 4). Judging will take place in various categories according to difficulty and age group — from beginner wind orchestras to the highest difficulty category for music university students. Jurors are top musicians from the Federal Armed Forces' military music service and civilian music universities.
In addition to the competitions, an accompanying workshop program will take place — masterclasses with Federal Armed Forces soloists, Yamaha workshops on instrumental technique and rehearsal methods, marching drills, and big band workshops. In the evenings, the Federal Armed Forces orchestras and the competition winners from previous years will perform — concerts that are considered a highlight of the youth wind music year in Balingen and the region.
The volksbankmesse Balingen is the central event hall in the Zollernalb district and can accommodate several thousand spectators. Balingen itself has around 35,000 inhabitants and is located on the Eyach river at the foot of the Swabian Jura. The city has been strongly involved in wind music for years — the Balingen City Orchestra and numerous music associations in the surrounding area are regular participants in the competitions.
BwMusix 2026 will be held from June 19th to 21st, 2026, at the volksbankmesse Balingen. The organizers are the Federal Armed Forces' military music service, Yamaha Music Europe, and the city of Balingen. The focus is on the competitions for youth wind orchestras, wind classes, and big bands.
Participants come from all over Germany and compete in various categories according to difficulty and age group. A professional jury of Federal Armed Forces soloists and civilian music university members evaluates the performances. In parallel, Yamaha workshops and masterclasses with Federal Armed Forces musicians will take place, and in the evenings, Federal Armed Forces orchestras and competition winners from previous years will perform.
