What is BUCHBERLIN?

BUCHBERLIN — The Berlin Book Fair sees itself as an annual public fair for the independent book scene in Berlin and Germany. Unlike the industry fairs in Frankfurt and Leipzig, BUCHBERLIN explicitly targets readers, not booksellers or licensing agents. The venue is the Arena Halle at Eichenstraße 4 (Alt-Treptow district, Treptow-Köpenick borough) — a former omnibus hall directly on the Spree riverbank in Treptow, which is now one of Berlin's most important event locations.

Focus: Fantasy, Romance, Crime

BUCHBERLIN specializes in entertainment literature — with clear focuses on Fantasy, Romance, and Crime/Thriller. This makes the fair attractive to a young, avid reading audience active in these genres (BookTok, BookTube, reading groups). Around 300 independent publishers and authors from all over Germany exhibit — from established indie publishers to self-publishing authors, who often encounter a broader readership here for the first time.

Around 80 Readings

The programmatic core of the fair are the approximately 80 readings, which take place simultaneously on several stages throughout the weekend. In addition, there are interview formats, Q&As, signing sessions, workshops, and discussions. Thus, BUCHBERLIN combines the function of a marketplace (buying books, meeting exhibitors) with that of a literary festival (attending readings, experiencing authors).

BUCHBERLIN Academy

In addition to the fair, the BUCHBERLIN Academy offers year-round professional development programs for authors and writers — deliberately designed to be accessible and flexible. This positions BUCHBERLIN not just as a sales platform, but as a year-round commitment to the independent German-language book scene.

Organization and Financing

The organizer is Bücherzauber e.V., a non-profit association that first held the festival in 2019. The fair is funded by the Berlin Senate Department for Culture and co-financed by the European Union. Sponsors include the bookstore chain Thalia and other literary organizations. The funding structure allows for keeping admission prices low and positioning the fair as a family event.

Arena Berlin as the Venue

Arena Berlin is an event area in the Alt-Treptow district between the Spree and Treptower Park — with Arena Halle, Glashaus, Badeschiff, and Arena Club. The Arena Halle itself is a listed former omnibus hall and offers around 7,000 m² of event space. For BUCHBERLIN, the hall is divided into exhibitor and stage zones — a format that productively combines the industrial past of the architecture with book culture.
