Family-friendly city festival on the Old Bridge — on the last weekend of June
Since 1979, the Brückenfest Heidelberg has been one of the city's most traditional summer festivals. The organizer is the Verein Alt-Heidelberg e.V., the district association of the Old Town — a civic, cultural, and social association that has organized the festival every year for almost half a century on the last weekend of June. The venue is the Brückenbuckel directly at the bridge gate of the Alte Brücke (officially Karl-Theodor-Bridge), one of Heidelberg's most famous landmarks.
The Brückenfest was launched in 1979 to finance the bronze sculpture "Brückenaffe" at the bridge gate. The sculpture by sculptor Gernot Rumpf was reinstalled in 1979 based on historical models — the monkey is considered a humorous monument against arrogance and vanity. However, the proceeds from the festival exceeded all expectations, and because the people of Heidelberg loved the Brückenfest so much, it became an annual tradition. Today, the proceeds (less costs) go to social projects in the Old Town.
The Brückenfest has retained its distinctly calm, family- and child-friendly character — unlike some other downtown festivals. Stages, club stands, and catering areas are set up on the Brückenbuckel and at the bridgehead on the Neckar. Several bands from the region play pop, jazz, folk, and rock; food and drinks are offered by clubs and restaurateurs from the Old Town. Children will find hands-on activities, craft, and game stands against the backdrop of the castle and the Neckar valley.
The Alte Brücke (Karl-Theodor-Bridge) has been the city's landmark in its current form since 1788. It connects Heidelberg's Old Town with the Neuenheim district across the Neckar river — the bridgehead in the Old Town with the bridge gate and the Brückenaffe sculpture is one of the most photographed motifs in Germany. Heidelberg, a university city with around 162,000 inhabitants in the Rhein-Neckar district (Baden-Württemberg), attracts millions of tourists from all over the world every year — but the Brückenfest remains primarily a festival for the people of Heidelberg and its districts.
The festival atmosphere is warm, set up for encounters within the Old Town neighborhood, with cold drinks, pretzels, sausages, and Swabian snacks at the club stands. The bands alternate between pop classics, jazz standards, and sing-along sets. On a clear night, the bands, the bridge, and the Neckar create a postcard backdrop that only Heidelberg can offer.
In 2026, Heidelberg's Old Town will once again celebrate its traditional Brückenfest on the last weekend of June. For two days, the Brückenbuckel, directly at the bridge gate of the Alte Brücke, transforms into a small, lively festival area — with several stages, club stands, and catering areas.
Live music from several bands playing pop, jazz, and folk alternates, clubs and restaurateurs from the Old Town serve drinks and food, and children will find hands-on activities and game stands. Free admission — the proceeds from the festival traditionally go to social projects in the Old Town.
The detailed program with performance times of individual bands will be published shortly before the festival on the association's website and the Facebook page of Verein Alt-Heidelberg e.V.
