About Roman Era XXL

"Roman Era XXL" is the anniversary intervention by the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier for the 40th anniversary of Trier's UNESCO World Heritage status. For eight months — from April 1 to November 15, 2026 — the museum's permanent exhibition will be expanded by a curatorial intervention that focuses on Trier's World Heritage sites and the city's Roman heritage. The Rheinisches Landesmuseum holds one of the world's most significant collections of Roman finds from the Trier and West German regions — mosaics, sculptures, tombstone reliefs, coins, everyday objects — making it ideally positioned to present the archaeological depth of the World Heritage to a broad audience.

The Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier is one of Germany's leading provincial archaeological museums and houses one of the most extensive collections of Roman finds from the West German region. Trier, as a former provincial capital and at times imperial residence, has left behind an exceptionally rich archaeological heritage spanning over two millennia, which is presented in the permanent exhibition — from monumental sculptures and mosaics to the famous "Neumagener Weinschiff" (original in the museum) and everyday objects such as pottery, tools, and jewelry.

The anniversary intervention "Roman Era XXL" — the title plays with the idea of further enlarging Trier's already monumental Roman architecture and heritage — expands the permanent exhibition with curatorial focal points that explicitly include the city's World Heritage sites. Milestones are planned within the exhibition to contextualize individual World Heritage sites, as well as educational formats that link visitors between the museum and the World Heritage sites.

The intervention runs for eight months and is part of the broader Trier World Heritage Anniversary Program 2026.
