Anniversary Intervention at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum for the 40th Anniversary of Trier's UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier is one of Germany's leading provincial archaeological museums and houses one of the most extensive collections of Roman finds from the West German region. Trier, as a former provincial capital and at times imperial residence, has left behind an exceptionally rich archaeological heritage spanning over two millennia, which is presented in the permanent exhibition — from monumental sculptures and mosaics to the famous "Neumagener Weinschiff" (original in the museum) and everyday objects such as pottery, tools, and jewelry.
The anniversary intervention "Roman Era XXL" — the title plays with the idea of further enlarging Trier's already monumental Roman architecture and heritage — expands the permanent exhibition with curatorial focal points that explicitly include the city's World Heritage sites. Milestones are planned within the exhibition to contextualize individual World Heritage sites, as well as educational formats that link visitors between the museum and the World Heritage sites.
The intervention runs for eight months and is part of the broader Trier World Heritage Anniversary Program 2026.
The 2026 intervention combines the archaeological research and educational work of the Rheinisches Landesmuseum with the World Heritage anniversary year. Over the eight-month period, additional educational formats will be integrated — guided tours, lectures, family programs — positioning the museum as a central educational hub for Trier's World Heritage. The exact program and curatorial concept will be published in spring 2026.
