55th Old Town Festival with Crafts Market, Flea Market, and over 200,000 Visitors
When the Heidelberg Old Town goes wild on the last weekend of September, the Heidelberger Herbst is here. Since 1971, the entire stretch between Bismarckplatz and Karlstor — about 1.5 kilometers of Hauptstraße plus all side streets, Marktplatz, Universitätsplatz, Kornmarkt, Karlsplatz, and the Neckar meadows — transforms into a gigantic city festival for one weekend in September. More than 200,000 visitors from the Rhine-Neckar region, from Mannheim, the Odenwald, and nearby Hesse flock to the historic city at the foot of the castle for two days.
The Heidelberger Herbst is three markets at once: on Hauptstraße, craft stands line up — jewelers, ceramic workshops, wood turners, leather workers, regional food producers, and beekeepers. In the alleys around Untere Straße and along the Neckar meadows, a huge flea market opens, which starts setting up as early as 6 a.m. — those who want to find treasures here must come early. Behind Universitätsplatz, a medieval market with craftspeople in historical costumes, mead and beer taverns, and jugglers is also set up.
Spread throughout the Old Town, several stages simultaneously host the Heidelberger Herbst. On Marktplatz in front of the Heiliggeistkirche, cover bands, regional acts, and Swabian-Baden folklore groups take turns. Universitätsplatz, located between the Old and New University buildings, usually features indie, rock, and jazz bands. On Kornmarkt, brass bands and big band formations play, and on Karlsplatz, often Schlager and dialect artists perform. As you stroll through the alleys, you'll hear a constant change of styles — the atmosphere is relaxed, multilingual (tourists from all over the world), and intergenerational.
On Sunday, the shops in Heidelberg's Old Town are open between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. — an additional incentive to shop for visitors who are already in the city. The Old Town's gastronomy — from the traditional Rote Ochsen and Schnitzelbank to the modern cafés around Marktplatz — also serves with outdoor seating. At the markets, you can try regional delicacies like Saumagen, Pfälzer Bratwurst, Flammkuchen, Riesling, and Federweißer — the Baden-Palatinate culinary axis is strongly represented at the Heidelberger Herbst.
The 2026 edition is the 55th iteration of the Heidelberger Herbst. Since its first edition in 1971, the festival has grown steadily — from a small Old Town festival to a major tourist magnet in Southern Germany. It is organized by Heidelberg Marketing GmbH together with the Altstadt district association, the merchants, and the City of Heidelberg.
Heidelberg, with around 160,000 inhabitants, is the seat of the Rhein-Neckar district (a district-free city) and has been a university city since 1386 — Germany's oldest university. The famous Heidelberg Castle towers over the Old Town, nestled between the Neckar River and the Königstuhl mountain. Hauptstraße, nearly 1.8 km long, is one of Europe's longest pedestrian zones. During the Heidelberger Herbst, you experience the tourist Heidelberg and authentic city life simultaneously — students, families, international guests, and locals stroll together through the alleys.
The anniversary edition — the 55th Heidelberger Herbst — spans two days between Bismarckplatz and Karlstor. Hauptstraße and all side streets become the festival grounds, along with Marktplatz, Universitätsplatz, Kornmarkt, Karlsplatz, and the Neckar meadows.
Over 200,000 visitors are expected. Heidelberg Marketing GmbH coordinates the program; hundreds of vendors, craftspeople, restaurateurs, and musicians are involved.
Free admission. Food and drinks at market prices. Medieval market food often slightly higher priced.
By train: ICE/IC to Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof, then tram 5/22 or bus line to Bismarckplatz (entry to the festival area). By car: A5 or A656 to Heidelberg, parking garages at Bismarckplatz and Karlstor, alternatively Park-and-Ride at Messplatz or Hauptbahnhof. The Old Town is largely car-free during the autumn festival.
Free admission to the entire festival grounds.
For more atmosphere: don't just stay on the crowded Hauptstraße, but venture into Untere Straße, Schiffgasse, or onto the Schlangenweg — there you'll find quieter stalls, intimate wine taverns, and beautiful views of the festival mile. If you're going to the flea market, be there before 9 a.m.
