Three weeks of wine enjoyment at Karlsplatz with a view of Heidelberg Castle
From October 1st to 18th, 2026, the traditional Heidelberger Weindorf will open its doors on Karlsplatz in the heart of Heidelberg's Old Town. For three weeks, the historic square beneath the walls of the world-famous castle transforms into a cozy pavilion village where vintners from Baden, Württemberg, and the Palatinate serve their wines. Stroll among wooden stalls, sit under fairy lights at wooden tables, and sample wines from the surrounding wine-growing regions of Baden, Württemberg, and the Palatinate.
The Weindorf presents a curated selection of vintners and cooperatives from the surrounding wine-growing regions:
Prices range from simple 'Schoppen' (glasses) for 4 to 6 Euros to premium wines for 8 to 15 Euros per glass. Many vintners are present at their stands to answer questions about the vineyard site, harvest, and vinification.
To accompany the wine, there's regional cuisine: Flammkuchen, Maultaschen, Saumagen, fried sausages, cheese platters, farmer's bread with lard, and Saumagen – everything the Baden-Württemberg culinary region has to offer. Vegetarian options are also available. The fairy lights, the warm pavilions, and the view of the castle create a magical atmosphere, especially in the evenings – pure Heidelberg romance.
On selected days (usually Friday and Saturday evenings, some Sundays), there's a musical program: Jazz trios, acoustic duos, singer-songwriters, big band performances. The stage is small, the format intimate – you sit close to the action and can listen peacefully while enjoying your wine.
Karlsplatz is located in the heart of Heidelberg's Old Town, on Hauptstraße at the level of the castle ascent. Above the square rises Heidelberg Castle – one of Europe's most famous castle ruins, spectacularly illuminated at night. This location makes the Weindorf unique: there are few wine events in Germany with such an iconic backdrop. Anyone taking photos of the Weindorf will have the castle as their background.
Heidelberg itself is not one of Germany's major wine-growing towns, but wine has been part of city life for centuries. The steep slopes of the Heiligenberg, the Königsstuhl area, and the surrounding hills once bore vines. Today, the nearby Bergstraße-Heidelberg region primarily maintains the regional wine tradition. The Weindorf connects the historic wine town with modern festival culture, attracting thousands of visitors annually from the Rhine-Neckar region and beyond.
The 2026 Weindorf will once again transform Karlsplatz into a cozy pavilion landscape. Sample wines from Baden, Württemberg, and the Palatinate, enjoy Flammkuchen and Maultaschen under fairy lights, and savor the iconic castle backdrop in the evenings. Live music (jazz, acoustic, singer-songwriters) will complement the program on several weekends.
Free admission. Wine prices typically €4–€8 per glass, premium wines up to €15.
By train: Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof (main station), then tram 5 or 22 to Karlsplatz / Universitätsplatz. By car: A5 exit Heidelberg/Schwetzingen, parking garages Schloss, Friedrich-Ebert-Platz, or Kornmarkt.
Free admission. Payment for wines and food directly at the stands.
Come in the evening after dusk – when the castle is illuminated and the fairy lights in the Weindorf are on, the most romantic atmosphere is created. It's quieter and more relaxed on weekdays compared to weekends.
