About Heidelberg Christmas Market
Heidelberg Christmas Market — edition 2026
2026 Program by Square
Heidelberg Marketing GmbH is organizing the market in 2026 in its established six-part format. On each of the six squares, vendors with different profiles present themselves: artisans and mulled wine stands at Marktplatz, young gastronomy and the famous Feuerzangenbowle at Universitätsplatz, the Winterwäldchen at Kornmarkt with a view of the castle, the ice rink at Karlsplatz, and additional stalls at Anatomiegarten and Bismarckplatz.
Over 140 stalls in total make the market one of the most extensive in Germany. The historic carousel — over 100 years old — is set up for children every year. Evening castle illuminations and light shows make visiting the market after sunset a first-class visual experience.

Six Squares, One Narrative
The Heidelberg Christmas Market is counted among Germany's most beautiful and romantic Advent markets. Unlike many large Christmas markets, it doesn't concentrate on a single square but spreads across six historic squares in the Old Town, connected by the Hauptstraße. The main program runs from November 23 to December 22, 2026; Bismarckplatz and the Winterwäldchen at Kornmarkt will remain open until January 1, 2027.
The Six Squares and Their Profiles
Each square has its own profile. Marktplatz forms the centerpiece with the large Christmas pyramid, classic mulled wine stands, and handicrafts. Universitätsplatz is famous for the Feuerzangenbowle, traditionally popular with younger crowds and students. Kornmarkt, with the Winterwäldchen — over 100 illuminated fir trees — and a direct view of Heidelberg Castle, offers one of the most impressive backdrops. Karlsplatz hosts the ice rink directly beneath the castle, a magical sight with evening illuminations. Anatomiegarten and Bismarckplatz complement the offerings with additional stalls and family activities.
Historic Carousel and Culinary Tradition
A highlight for families is the over 100-year-old historic carousel — a piece of market history that is set up in Heidelberg every year. Culinary traditions dominate: mulled wine, Feuerzangenbowle, candied almonds, gingerbread hearts, and regional specialties from Baden-Württemberg such as Flammkuchen, Maultaschen, Dampfnudeln, and potato soup.
Heidelberg, the Castle, and the Advent World
Heidelberg, in the Heidelberg district of Baden-Württemberg, is one of Germany's most famous cities — known for its university (Germany's oldest), Heidelberg Castle, and the Old Town with the Heilig-Geist-Kirche and the Alte Brückentor. The Christmas market makes the most of this backdrop: arriving from the Old Bridge in the evening, one sees the illuminated stalls, the ice rink beneath the glowing castle, the Feuerzangenbowle at Universitätsplatz — a scene regularly listed among Europe's most beautiful Advent markets in international travel guides.
