Italian Concert Evening in the historic Smithy Barn of Herrstein
Visitors to Herrstein for the first time are surprised by the astonishingly dense concentration of historic buildings: half-timbered houses from the late Middle Ages and early modern period frame the castle square; the Smithy Barn is one of the most lovingly restored venues in the region. It is precisely here that the Serata Italiana finds its stage. The interior, with its visible wooden beams and low stage, creates a concert atmosphere far removed from classical concert halls.
The concept of the Edelstein-Serenade connects venues in several municipalities of the Herrstein-Rhaunen administrative district into a thematic concert series. Each evening bears its own motto. The Serata Italiana focuses on works by Italian composers – from Baroque sonatas and classical arias to lyrical pieces from the 19th and 20th centuries. The works are regularly performed by ensembles that appear in the major houses of Mainz, Saarbrücken, or Frankfurt and take advantage of the rare opportunity in Herrstein to play very close to the audience.
The intermission is part of the concept: Italian aperitivi and small appetizers are served in the inner courtyard, allowing the audience to mingle and enjoy the atmosphere of the town center. The concert then continues with the second part of the program. The evening typically ends around 9 p.m., leaving time for a stroll through the illuminated alleys.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the Edelstein-Serenade association in early summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years: doors open at 6:30 p.m. in the Smithy Barn, concert begins at 7 p.m. with an approximately forty-five-minute first part, followed by an aperitivo break in the inner courtyard with Italian snacks and drinks, then a second concert part until approx. 9 p.m. The focus is on works by Italian composers in arrangements for chamber ensemble and voice.
