Festival of Revivals of Independent Performing Arts
The re:festival is an exceptional format by the Tafelhalle in the KunstKulturQuartier Nuremberg, Bavaria. Unlike traditional festivals, the focus is not on premieres, but on revivals: Selected productions from the independent performing arts are shown again – "a step back for the future".
In the independent scene, many productions disappear after just a few performances, even if they are artistically outstanding. The re:festival provides a stage for these works from dance, theatre, performance, music, and circus to reach an audience again – a contribution to sustainability in art production.
In 2026, the fifth edition will be under the motto MONSTROUS: Medieval Fastnachtsspiele (carnival plays), romantic horror stories, dystopian science fiction – transcendent figures have always populated stories and myths that shape our desires, fears, and fantasies of power.
A dense program of revivals, workshops, talks, and more is offered. In 2026, the Künstlerhaus in the KunstKulturQuartier will provide its halls as an alternative venue due to the renovation of the Tafelhalle's roof. Previous editions also emphasized accessibility, for example, through audio description in cooperation with EveryBody Access Nürnberg.
With the re:festival, Nuremberg positions itself as a place that promotes independent performing arts from the city, Bavaria, Germany, and Europe. The festival is an important date in the cultural calendar of the city of Nuremberg.
The fifth edition of the re:festival runs from October 1 to 4, 2026, under the motto MONSTROUS. It will feature revivals of selected productions from the independent performing arts – dance, theatre, performance, music, and circus.
As the roof of the Tafelhalle is being renovated, the Künstlerhaus in the KunstKulturQuartier will serve as the venue. The program will be supplemented by workshops, talks, and networking formats. The open call for submissions ran until January 16, 2026.
Motto: MONSTROUS
Note: The specific program of pieces and daily schedule for 2026 will be published by the Tafelhalle after the open call and jury selection – the invited productions will only be known afterwards.
