Concerts within Medieval Walls
The Katharinenruine is one of the most remarkable structures in Nuremberg's Old Town: remnants of the Gothic Dominican convent of St. Katharina, destroyed in World War II and never rebuilt. The high Gothic walls stand without a roof – a "ruin garden" in the heart of the historic city center. Since the early 2000s, the KunstKulturQuartier of the City of Nuremberg has been using this extraordinary setting for an open-air festival.
Musical Diversity
The festival deliberately programs broadly – not a genre-specific festival, but a curated mix of indie, folk, soul, pop, jazz, classical, world music, and occasional theatre or dance performances. The lineup ranges from established stars (Die Sterne, Triggerfinger, Curtis Harding, Alela Diane) to young newcomers, from international acts (Belgium, USA, Great Britain) to regional artists (Voodoo Jürgens from Vienna, Lina Maly from Hamburg).
10 Concerts in 14 Days
The festival spans about two weeks from mid-June to early July with around 10 concerts – one concert per evening, with some days featuring double programming. Start times are usually 8 PM, with doors opening at 7 PM. In case of rain, the event is moved indoors to the KunstKulturQuartier – this is part of the risk of the ruin stage.
2026 Edition – Lineup
In summer 2026 (June 19 – July 3), confirmed acts include: Blackout Problems, Die Sterne, Curtis Harding, DOTA, Triggerfinger, Ella Stern, HE/RO, Udo West, Lina Maly & Enno Bunger, Alela Diane.
City Context
The Katharinenruine is located directly within the KunstKulturQuartier – an arts district featuring the Museum of Modern Art, Kunsthalle, Filmhaus, and Tafelhalle. The district is a modern cultural hub for the city, hosting around 200 events annually. The Open Air is its summer flagship event. Before and after the concert, a visit to an exhibition at the Kunsthalle or a glass of wine in the courtyard is recommended.
Accessibility
The KunstKulturQuartier offers audio description and sign language interpretation for selected concerts – inclusion is taken seriously.
