About Klaragassen-Kärwa

Right in the heart of Nuremberg's Old Town, between the Kunsthalle and the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Klaragasse celebrates its street festival for three days every September. Shops, pubs, cafés, and restaurants open their doors to the street, one food stall lining up after another, complemented by several stages with live music, art installations, and a lovingly curated family program. The festival has the classic Franconian Kärwa (Kirchweih - church consecration festival) character with a modern big-city flair and is considered a insider tip for those seeking an authentic neighbourhood festival away from the main tourist crowds.

An Alley Becomes a Living Room

For years, Klaragasse has been one of the most distinctive streets in Nuremberg's city center. Located directly by the Klarakirche (St. Clara's Church), it connects creative shops, record stores, bars, cafés, and small galleries into a mini-scene stretching from the adjacent museum quarter and the Germanisches Nationalmuseum to the Künstlerhaus (artists' house). Once a year, the alley is completely closed to traffic for a weekend and transformed into a festival mile.

Kärwa Tradition with Big City Sound

The Klaragassenfest (officially also "Klaragassen-Kärwa") picks up on the Franconian tradition of the Kirchweih (church consecration festival): beer tapping, bratwurst grilling, toasting together, and hours of sitting outside the establishments. However, here, tradition mixes with indie pop, folk, hip-hop, and live acts on several small stages. Local venues like BrotZeit, Einfachso, Wacht am Rhein, or Original Bar participate, along with pop-up stalls from local associations.

What's Happening Where

  • Klarakirche: Festival service, concerts, and a fire show to kick things off
  • Klaragasse itself: Main stage, food trucks, beer stands, family program during the day
  • Courtyards and Venues: small concerts, DJ sets, readings, comic sales, street art events

Location and Neighbourhood Feel

Klaragasse is located in the heart of the southern Old Town (State of Bavaria, City of Nuremberg), just a few steps from the main train station. Those who want to experience Nuremberg beyond the main market routes will find a relaxed neighbourhood atmosphere here on the festival weekend, with locals, students, and culture enthusiasts. Admission is free.

Klaragassen-Kärwa — edition 2026

Shops, bars, and restaurants will bring their offerings to the street, several stages will feature live music, alongside family activities, street art, and a traditional Kärwa beer tapping ceremony. Admission is free.
