Northern Germany's largest spring Volksfest
When the lights of the Ferris wheels begin to sparkle in the Bremen sky from the end of March, and the scent of almonds and bratwurst wafts across the Bürgerweide, it's clear: the Osterwiese has opened. For almost a century, this 17-day Volksfest has been a firm fixture in the Hanseatic city's spring calendar, drawing around 500,000 people to the grounds right next to the main train station each year.
The Osterwiese began in 1928 as the "Osterwiesenfest" in the Gröpelingen district and was given its current name in 1933. After the Second World War, the Volksfest moved to the Bürgerweide in 1946, the large festival site on Hollerallee that also serves as the home for the Freimarkt in October. Since then, the Osterwiese has developed into the little sister of the major "Fifth Season" event – more compact, family-oriented, but with the same drive.
Around 200 showmen bring their rides and stalls to Bremen in 2026. You can ride roller coasters on the Euro Coaster by the Buwalda-Fackler family, be shaken up on Excalibur XXL by showman Bruch, or test your nerves in the ghost train. For families, there are children's carousels, classic dodgems, and giant slides, plus the whole world of Volksfest culinary delights: candied almonds, Schmalzkuchen (lard cakes), Knipp (a local dish), Champignonpfanne (fried mushrooms), mulled wine, and Bremen beer. The Osterwiese opens on March 27, 2026, at 6 PM with the traditional beer tapping, followed by a fireworks display at 9:45 PM.
The Bürgerweide is located immediately north of the main train station in the Findorff district. You can reach the Osterwiese on foot from the station in five minutes – an unbeatable advantage compared to similar Volksfests in other major cities. Those arriving by car should use the nearby parking garages at the station or the ÖVB-Arena; the festival grounds themselves offer very limited paid parking. The Osterwiese is open daily from 2 PM to 11 PM – with the exception of Good Friday (April 3, 2026), when the grounds remain closed out of respect for the solemn holiday.
The Osterwiese 2026 opens on Friday, March 27, with the traditional beer tapping at 6 PM. At 9:45 PM, the opening fireworks will illuminate the Bremen sky over the Bürgerweide.
The focus is on around 21 major rides, including the Euro Coaster (Buwalda Fackler) and Excalibur XXL (Bruch), plus dodgems, Breakdancer, ghost trains, slides, a Ferris wheel, and numerous family carousels. The festival grounds close on Easter Sunday and end on April 12, 2026.
The Bremer Osterwiese 2026 transformed the Bürgerweide behind the main train station into Northern Germany's most important spring Volksfest for 17 days. Around 500,000 visitors came from March 27 to April 12, 2026; around 200 showmen were involved.
Free admission to the festival grounds. Rides, food stalls, and game booths are paid for individually. Savings tip 2026: on April 7 and 8, get 50% off rides with a voucher from the WESER-KURIER.
