Four Decades of Club Festival in Roth's Old Town
The Rother Altstadtfest has been the central citizens' festival of the Große Kreisstadt Roth in the Roth district (Bavarian administrative region of Middle Franconia) since 1983. The 44th edition, taking place in 2026, marks an anniversary of over four decades of uninterrupted festival tradition. The city of Roth is the patron and organizer; however, the festival's content is shaped by the local clubs and associations: sports clubs, fire departments, traditional costume groups, music clubs, church communities, aid organizations, youth organizations — they all get their own stand, tent, or pavilion and shape the character of the festival.
The Entire City Center as a Festival Ground
Unlike many city festivals, the Rother Altstadtfest is not limited to a single square: the entire city center of Roth is closed to car traffic. The main street, market square, and the adjacent alleys transform into a festival mile with distributed activity areas, three music stages with different styles, and a great culinary variety. The atmosphere is cozy and accessible: families, seniors, and young people mingle in the old town, and everyone finds their favorite stand.
Program for Children and Families
The family program is one of the hallmarks of the Rother Altstadtfest: face painting, 'Hau den Lukas' (a strength-testing game), lucky wheels, craft stations, and hands-on activities by youth organizations offer numerous diversions for children. The pavilions of clubs — fire department, THW (Federal Agency for Technical Relief), police, sports clubs — also present their work in a child-friendly and interactive manner. The Altstadtfest thus also functions as a gentle form of recruiting young talent for Roth's club life.
Culinary Delights — Sweet and Sour, Hearty and Exotic
Culinary-wise, the Altstadtfest offers "sweet and sour, hearty and exotic" — from the classic Nuremberg Bratwurst and Franconian Schäuferla to international specialties (Asian noodle dishes, Italian specialties, gyros, falafel) to ice cream, crêpes, and candied almonds. Drinks are served depending on the stand by the local sports club, the fire department, or local restaurateurs — festival beer from Middle Franconian breweries dominates.
Roth — City of Hilpolt-Burg and Textile Printing
The Große Kreisstadt Roth, with around 26,000 inhabitants, is located in the Middle Franconian Basin between Nuremberg and Schwabach. The city is known for Ratibor Castle, its medieval town center structure, and its long tradition as an industrial location (Leoni, textile printing). Roth is internationally known as the venue for the Datev Challenge Roth, one of the largest long-distance triathlons in the world. Besides the Kirchweih (church fair) and Christkindlmarkt (Christmas market), the Altstadtfest is the city's most important citizens' festival.
