Centuries-old costume ball on the Darß peninsula
When the shortest days of the year are over on the Baltic Sea peninsula of Darß and February casts its clear, cold light over the Bodden lagoons, one of the most peculiar festival traditions of northern Germany begins: the Borner Fastnacht. Born a.Darß, an old fishing village with about 1,000 inhabitants, has turned its winter rituals into a festival weekend with a very long tradition. Originally, the balls took place during the time when the sailors from Born spent the winter at home – and their wives and they themselves bridged the long winter months with elaborate costumes, disguises, and festivities.
The ball has its own rhythm: mandatory costumes, individual masked participants or groups appear one by one on the dance floor, a jury from the audience judges the originality, and late in the evening comes the unmasking: the winners are first called out by number only, so their identity remains secret until the last moment. Then the masks are revealed. This dramatic structure distinguishes the Borner Maskenball from most other carnival formats in Germany – it's less about the classic Rhineland merriment and more about the older, theatrical ritual of disguise.
Everyone who likes to "slip into another skin" is welcome – with their own costume idea. The audience, who do not wish to come in costume, are welcome to watch, take seats at the tables, and contribute to the atmosphere. Tickets are available in advance from the Born tourist information office for €10, and at the box office for €12. The BornAqua, actually the community's swimming pool and event hall, is transformed into a festively decorated ballroom for the ball.
Anyone who wants to experience the costume ball can easily combine it with a winter weekend on the peninsula. Born a.Darß is located between the Saaler Bodden and the Darß forest, in close proximity to the Bodden lagoons and the lakes bordering them. In February, the region is famous for its crane observations, the salt marshes, and the winter-empty beaches. A winter hike through the Darß forest, a walk on the Weststrand beach, and a traditional fish dinner turn the costume ball weekend into a standalone short break.
In 2026, BornAqua will again open its doors on the first weekend in February for the traditional costume ball. The Born tourist office continues the format tested over generations: mandatory costumes for active participants, individual and group performances, jury evaluation by an audience panel, and the final unmasking of the winners.
The ball is one of the most important winter events on the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula and is considered indispensable by regional connoisseurs. The Tonnenabschlagen on the third Saturday in February serves as a second highlight of the Borner carnival season, and both events are linked through the costume tradition.
