Grand Festival Weekend for the 775th City Anniversary — August 27th to 30th, 2026
Borna in the Leipzig district (Saxony) is celebrating a once-in-a-generation anniversary in 2026: 775 years since its first documented mention. The former mining town in southern Leipzig — now part of the Leipzig Lakeland — plans a year-long festival program with concerts, theater performances, historical city tours, and activities at the Wyhra History Courtyard and in local museums. The highlight is the grand festival weekend from August 27th to 30th, 2026.
The festival weekend is spread across four central Borna squares: Marktplatz, Volksplatz, Lutherplatz, and Dinterplatz. The kick-off on Thursday, August 27th, belongs to the Police Big Band. On Friday, August 28th, «Rock in Symphony Vol. 6 — The Wild 80s» on the Volksplatz brings 1980s rock hits in symphonic arrangements to the open-air amphitheater. Saturday, August 29th, is dedicated to the Fire Brigade Florian Day on the Lutherplatz — with a family festival, an emergency services mile, and live music.
Sunday, August 30th, is the dramatic climax: first the ecumenical church service, then the Anniversary City Run over a symbolic 7.75 km, and finally in the afternoon, the grand Festival Parade across Marktplatz and Sachsenallee. Schools, clubs, companies, city districts, and initiatives have been invited to participate in the parade — as a joint showcase of Borna's civic diversity. Musical performers throughout the weekend include Nightfever, Steffen Lukas & Plattenbauorchester, and the Saxon country singer Linda Feller.
Borna, a major district town in the Leipzig district, was shaped for centuries by agriculture and, from the 19th century onwards, by lignite mining. Today, the city is located in the heart of the Leipzig Lakeland — Germany's youngest cultural landscape formed from reclaimed open-cast mines. The Volksplatz event arena, with its open-air stage for up to 5,500 spectators, is one of the best-known open-air concert venues in Central Germany; the city has invested heavily in its cultural infrastructure in recent years. The 2026 festival weekend will be the first full-scale manifestation of this transformation.
The festival weekend is the highlight of a year-long program celebrating Borna's 775th anniversary. Four days, four squares, one city — schools, clubs, the fire brigade, companies, and citizen initiatives have been invited to actively participate in the program and the festival parade.
Musical highlights include: «Rock in Symphony Vol. 6 — The Wild 80s» on Friday evening on the Volksplatz (event arena for up to 5,500 spectators); Fire Brigade Florian Day with a family festival on Saturday; and on Sunday, the grand festival parade.
The festival weekend program is partially free (Festival Parade, Florian Day, City Run spectators, Church Service). Tickets are required for concerts on the Volksplatz, depending on the event (Rock in Symphony Vol. 6 from approx. €35).
