Germany's largest university culture festival — this time 'goes Europe'
Neue Wände is Germany's largest festival of university culture. What began in 2010 as an experimental project within the framework of the European Capital of Culture (Ruhr.2010) has become a firm institution — with around 600 participating students annually, four stages, and 50 acts over a weekend. From May 8th to 10th, 2026, the festival invites you to its next edition at the Theater Münster. The motto: 'Neue Wände... goes Europe'.
The spectrum is the concept: on stage, Classical meets Punk, Readings meet Musicals, Acrobatics meet French Horn. Spread across the weekend:
The innovation in 2026 is the European opening: 43 students from Münster's European partner cities will travel to participate and co-create productions with Münster universities. Participating cities include:
The participation of the partner cities is more than symbolic: joint workshops in the run-up will lead to bilingual performances and genre-blending sets.
Advance sales begin on April 1st, 2026, via the theatre box office, online, and on-site. Ticket prices are student-friendly, ranging from 5 to 15 Euros per programme item. Festival passes are available — details at neue-waende.de.
Münster in Westphalia (North Rhine-Westphalia) is one of Germany's most densely populated university cities: the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität (WWU), the FH Münster, the Kunstakademie, the Musikhochschule, and smaller colleges gather over 60,000 students. 'Neue Wände' brings this diversity to a common stage once a year — positioning Münster as a City of University Culture. The initiative was linked to Ruhr.2010 in 2010 and helped in the successful bid for 'City of Science' in 2012.
The next edition of Neue Wände opens the doors of Theater Münster from May 8th to 10th, 2026. In 2026, the festival takes a European step — with students from five partner cities — and maintains its cross-genre mix of music, theatre, dance, and art.
