Trail run through the Treppenviertel with Elbe river view — 10th anniversary 2026
Blankenese is Hamburg's most upscale district — built in terraces on the slope above the Elbe, with winding stairs, traditional fishermen's houses, and 19th-century villas. The Heldenlauf has been using this topographic feature for its route concept since 2017: Instead of traversing a flat city park, runners must conquer the Treppenviertel — over 4,700 steps are spread across the former fishing village, which today belongs to the Altona district.
The organizers have structured the event into five distances that represent different levels of difficulty:
The naming "Sutsche" (cozy) and "Derbe" (tough) reflects the Hamburg mentality — the run doesn't take itself too seriously, but it is technically and physically demanding.
For the tenth anniversary in 2026, the organizers have conceived the special competition "MISSION ELBRACE": 111 runners compete against the historic freighter Cap San Diego, which is anchored at the Überseebrücke. Over a 4.76 km Elbe riverbank path, the ship and runners start simultaneously — whoever is faster wins. A playful, symbolic staging that captures Hamburg's identity as a port city.
What distinguishes the run from comparable trail runs is the view. At almost every point on the route, you have a view of the Elbe — container ships pass downstream, HVV ferries shuttle between the banks, sometimes a cruise ship is anchored. Those running the half marathon distance traverse the Strandweg, Mühlenberg, the Treppenviertel, and parts of the Süllberg — one of the most beautiful routes a half marathon can offer in Germany.
Marathon Hamburg Veranstaltungs GmbH has been organizing the run since 2017 and has developed the format into one of Hamburg's most distinguished running events. Registration is via RaceResult.
The 2026 edition celebrates the run's tenth anniversary with a special staging: MISSION ELBRACE. 111 runners compete against the historic freighter Cap San Diego — over a 4.76 km Elbe riverbank path. A playful symbolism that captures Hamburg's maritime heritage. In addition, the five established main distances will be run, from the 6.5 km Fun run to the 21.1 km half marathon in two variants (Sutsche/Derbe).
Exact start times will be published in August 2026 by Marathon Hamburg Veranstaltungs GmbH. Online registration via heldenlauf.de and my.raceresult.com.
