About Sülldorf-Iserbrook Fire Brigade Festival

The fire brigade festival of the Sülldorf-Iserbrook Volunteer Fire Brigade is one of the largest and most traditional Volksfests (popular festivals) in western Hamburg. Every year in September, the brigade invites visitors for three days of rides, children's activities, a party night, and a 'Blaulichtmeile' (blue light mile) on the festival grounds at Sülldorfer Kirchenweg. The 54th edition will take place from September 11th to 13th, 2026, in the Sülldorf district of Altona. The event is organised by the Friends' Association of the Sülldorf-Iserbrook Volunteer Fire Brigade (FF Sülldorf-Iserbrook e.V.), which uses the proceeds to support equipment and training for the volunteer emergency responders.

Volksfest Tradition in Western Hamburg

The fire brigade festival in Sülldorf has been organised since 1971 by the Sülldorf-Iserbrook Volunteer Fire Brigade – one of the many volunteer brigades that support Hamburg's professional fire brigade in its district operations. Over more than half a century, the festival has evolved from a small summer party of the brigade into a three-day district event that attracts thousands of visitors from across the Altona district and beyond each year.

Three Days of Activities for All Generations

The event combines classic Volksfest elements with the special atmosphere of a fire brigade event: rides and carousels for families, a 'Blaulichtmeile' (blue light mile) featuring vehicles from the brigade and Hamburg's emergency services, hands-on activities for children (water spraying wall, bouncy castle, dress-up box), and a party night with live music and a DJ on Saturday. Sunday traditionally focuses on the 'Frühschoppen' (morning pint) and family activities.

  • Friday: Opening with keg tapping ceremony, initial rides, beer tent
  • Saturday: Full festival operation, live music in the evening, tombola
  • Sunday: Frühschoppen, family activities, Blaulichtmeile with demonstrations

In the Heart of Sülldorf

The festival grounds are located directly on the S1 S-Bahn line between Sülldorf and Iserbrook in Hamburg's Altona district – a pair of districts on the outskirts between Blankenese and the state border with Schleswig-Holstein. Travelling by S-Bahn (Sülldorf station) is the most convenient option, as parking spaces around the festival site are limited.

What the Proceeds Support

As with many festivals organised by volunteer fire brigades in Hamburg, the proceeds go to the brigade's Friends' Association. This association uses the funds to finance additional equipment, training and further education for the brigade members, youth work by the junior fire brigade, and social activities for the brigade. Visiting the festival thus also means supporting volunteer engagement in the district.
