Hamburg's largest fire brigade festival on the outskirts – since 1971
The fire brigade festival in Sülldorf has been organised since 1971 by the Sülldorf-Iserbrook Volunteer Fire Brigade – one of the many volunteer brigades that support Hamburg's professional fire brigade in its district operations. Over more than half a century, the festival has evolved from a small summer party of the brigade into a three-day district event that attracts thousands of visitors from across the Altona district and beyond each year.
The event combines classic Volksfest elements with the special atmosphere of a fire brigade event: rides and carousels for families, a 'Blaulichtmeile' (blue light mile) featuring vehicles from the brigade and Hamburg's emergency services, hands-on activities for children (water spraying wall, bouncy castle, dress-up box), and a party night with live music and a DJ on Saturday. Sunday traditionally focuses on the 'Frühschoppen' (morning pint) and family activities.
The festival grounds are located directly on the S1 S-Bahn line between Sülldorf and Iserbrook in Hamburg's Altona district – a pair of districts on the outskirts between Blankenese and the state border with Schleswig-Holstein. Travelling by S-Bahn (Sülldorf station) is the most convenient option, as parking spaces around the festival site are limited.
As with many festivals organised by volunteer fire brigades in Hamburg, the proceeds go to the brigade's Friends' Association. This association uses the funds to finance additional equipment, training and further education for the brigade members, youth work by the junior fire brigade, and social activities for the brigade. Visiting the festival thus also means supporting volunteer engagement in the district.
From September 11th to 13th, 2026, the Sülldorf-Iserbrook Volunteer Fire Brigade will celebrate the 54th edition of its traditional fire brigade festival on the festival grounds at Sülldorfer Kirchenweg 235 in Hamburg's Sülldorf district.
Over three days, visitors can expect rides, game stalls, a beer tent with live music on Saturday evening, a Sunday morning pint ('Frühschoppen'), and the popular 'Blaulichtmeile' (blue light mile) with demonstrations by the fire brigade and partner emergency services. Children can enjoy hands-on activities, carousels, and a tombola. Admission is free – proceeds benefit the brigade's Friends' Association.
