Frisian winter-driving tradition with torchlight procession
The Biikebrennen — «Biiki» in Frisian — is one of North Frisia's most characteristic customs, celebrated annually on the evening of February 21st, the eve of St. Peter's Day, on the west coast and islands. In Niebüll and its district Deezbüll, the tradition is celebrated with particular impressiveness, featuring a torchlight procession, band music, and a large Biike bonfire.
The roots of the Biikebrennen reach far back into pre-Christian times — symbolically, winter is driven away with fire, and spring is welcomed. In Frisian tradition, the fire originally also celebrated the departure of the whalers, who set sail in February. Today, the custom lives on primarily as a communal memorial festival.
Since 2014, the Biikebrennen has been registered in the Federal List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO — an acknowledgment that underscores the importance of this custom for North Frisian identity.
What makes the Biikebrennen evening in Niebüll-Deezbüll particularly special is its intergenerational character. From preschool children with torches to grandmothers preparing the kale supper afterwards, all generations are involved. It is not a tourist event — but a genuine district festival, to which visitors are welcome, but not the focus.
Niebüll is a town in the district of North Frisia, about 12 km from the Danish border. It is the starting point of the railway to Sylt (Hindenburgdamm) and the seat of important North Frisian institutions. The Biikebrennen is part of a dense calendar of traditions, ranging from the Niebüll Biike and the Schwesing Biikebrennen to the many Biike bonfires on Sylt, Föhr, Amrum, and Pellworm.
The course of events in 2026 will follow the established pattern that the town of Niebüll and the district of Deezbüll have maintained for decades. A torchlight procession will form at the Town Hall Square and proceed in a closed line to the Biikeplatz — a route of about 1 km through Niebüll's town center.
Niebüll station on the Marschbahn railway line Hamburg–Westerland. From the station, a 5-minute walk to Niebüll Town Hall Square. By car: B5 Westküstenstraße.
Free. For the subsequent kale supper, consumption on site.
Bring warm clothing — February on the North Sea coast is windy and cold. Sturdy footwear for the Biikeplatz (often on meadowland).
