Frisian torchlight procession and Biike bonfire of the North Villages Sylt on February 21, 2026
The Biikebrennen is one of Schleswig-Holstein's oldest traditional festivals. On February 21 – the eve of St. Peter's Day – large bonfires are lit on the North Frisian islands, Halligen, and the North Frisian mainland coast. The tradition dates back to pre-Christian spring fires; later, the Biikebrennen served as a farewell signal for whalers before they set sail for the Arctic. Since 2014, the Biikebrennen has been part of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in Germany.
In the north of Sylt, the three villages of Braderup, Wenningstedt, and Kampen – collectively known as the "North Villages" – have agreed on a central Biike bonfire at the Lighthouse Path "Loch 16" by the golf course. A separate torchlight procession starts from each of the three villages, converging at the bonfire site – an impressive path of light across the dunes and heath.
The North Villages Biikebrennen 2026 follows the proven choreography:
On the North Frisian islands, the Biikebrennen is *the* winter highlight – not Carnival, not New Year's Eve. The Frisians welcome spring and bid farewell to winter – "Tjen di Biiki ön" ("Light the Biike") is the traditional Frisian call. The UNESCO recognition in 2014 has increased its visibility beyond North Frisia; the festival is accompanied by reports in national media every year. The joint North Villages bonfire at Loch 16 is one of Sylt's central and most well-attended Biike events.
The 2026 Biikebrennen falls on a Saturday – February 21. This makes the traditional Frisian festival of lights particularly accessible for day-trippers and weekend vacationers in 2026. Sylt's North Villages are hosting their Biike as a joint festival of lights for the three villages of Braderup, Wenningstedt, and Kampen, as in previous years.
Mulled wine and punch will be served from 5:00 PM at the Friesenkapelle in Wenningstedt. Torch distribution will take place from 5:45 PM at the Kampen fire station. Around 6:30 PM, the Biike will be lit jointly by representatives of the three North Villages at the Lighthouse Path "Loch 16" by the golf course.
