Lünen's largest Volksfest – four days of a mix of city festival and funfair with a duck race on the Lippe and barrel tapping on Thursday evening
The Lünsche Mess dates back to 1980 and has been a fixed date in the Lünen city calendar ever since. Today, it is the most important Volksfest in the city and attracts tens of thousands of visitors from the entire Unna district. The mix of city festival (stages, music, club stands) and funfair (carousels, shooting gallery, snacks) makes it the Lünen version of a classic Rhenish-Westphalian Schützenfest – but without a shooting club.
The Lünsche Mess 2026 runs from Thursday, September 10th to Sunday, September 13th, 2026, in Lünen's city center. Main areas are at the Theater- und Pfarrer-Bremer-Parkplatz, in the pedestrian zone, at Tobiaspark, and at Willy-Brandt-Platz.
The traditional opening ritual takes place on Thursday evening at 6:00 PM: the city's barrel tapping with the mayor and club chairmen. This officially opens the Mess, the first Pils flows, and the carousels start spinning.
Behind the Lünsche Mess is the Cityring Lünen e.V., the central advertising and event association of Lünen retailers and restaurateurs. The Cityring coordinates the program, stages, safety concept, and cooperation with the city. The showmen and women travel from all over the Ruhr area and the Münsterland.
With around 85,000 inhabitants, Lünen is the largest city in the Unna district and is located on the northern edge of the Ruhr area, on the Lippe river. The former mining town has positioned itself as a logistics and educational hub since structural change. The Lippe river flows through the middle of the city – and it is precisely here that the duck race takes place, the annual highlight for children and families.
The 2026 edition of the Lünsche Mess is the largest Volksfest of the year in Lünen. The organizer is Cityring Lünen e.V. in cooperation with the city and the showmen.
Admission to the Volksfest is free. Rides and food are charged per consumption. Duck race: purchase a rubber duck or be a spectator.
By train: Lünen Hauptbahnhof and Lünen-Süd are directly on line RE3/RB50 between Dortmund and Münster. About a 10-minute walk from the main station to the city center. By car via the A2 (exit Kamen-Zentrum or Lünen) or the A1 (exit Holzwickede).
Due to road closures, the parking garages on the outskirts of the city center (Persiluhr, Cappenberger Platz) are recommended. Park-and-Walk from the sports field.
Free admission. Rides and food are charged per consumption. For the duck race, either buy your own duck or watch others.
Several stages, food court, carousel center, snack stands, bars. Outdoor seating at Lünen's restaurants. Toilets at various locations.
If you want to experience the perfect start, come on Thursday at 6 PM for the barrel tapping. If you have a family, come on Saturday morning for the duck race on the Lippe. If you want the funfair experience, come on Saturday evening – that's when all the rides are fully occupied and the stages are loudest. Sunday's open shopping is worthwhile for a relaxed stroll.
