Tips
If you want to experience the perfect start, come on Thursday at 6 PM for the barrel tapping. If you have a family, come on Saturday morning for the duck race on the Lippe. If you want the funfair experience, come on Saturday evening – that's when all the rides are fully occupied and the stages are loudest. Sunday's open shopping is worthwhile for a relaxed stroll.
Volksfest with History
The Lünsche Mess dates back to 1980 and has been a fixed date in the Lünen city calendar ever since. Today, it is the most important Volksfest in the city and attracts tens of thousands of visitors from the entire Unna district. The mix of city festival (stages, music, club stands) and funfair (carousels, shooting gallery, snacks) makes it the Lünen version of a classic Rhenish-Westphalian Schützenfest – but without a shooting club.
When and Where is the Mess?
The Lünsche Mess 2026 runs from Thursday, September 10th to Sunday, September 13th, 2026, in Lünen's city center. Main areas are at the Theater- und Pfarrer-Bremer-Parkplatz, in the pedestrian zone, at Tobiaspark, and at Willy-Brandt-Platz.
Thursday Evening – The Barrel Tapping
The traditional opening ritual takes place on Thursday evening at 6:00 PM: the city's barrel tapping with the mayor and club chairmen. This officially opens the Mess, the first Pils flows, and the carousels start spinning.
The Program at a Glance
- Opening on Thursday with barrel tapping at 6 PM
- Carousels, roller coaster, bumper cars, shooting galleries at Theater- und Pfarrer-Bremer-Parkplatz
- Music stages in the pedestrian zone and at Willy-Brandt-Platz with cover bands, Schlager artists, and DJs
- Duck Race on the Lippe – a traditional popular sports highlight where rubber ducks race for victory in the Lippe river
- Flea Market in various areas
- Sunday Shopping with a long festival day in the city center
- Closing on Sunday evening with the festival winding down
Cityring Lünen as Organizer
Behind the Lünsche Mess is the Cityring Lünen e.V., the central advertising and event association of Lünen retailers and restaurateurs. The Cityring coordinates the program, stages, safety concept, and cooperation with the city. The showmen and women travel from all over the Ruhr area and the Münsterland.
Lünen – District Capital in the Unna District
With around 85,000 inhabitants, Lünen is the largest city in the Unna district and is located on the northern edge of the Ruhr area, on the Lippe river. The former mining town has positioned itself as a logistics and educational hub since structural change. The Lippe river flows through the middle of the city – and it is precisely here that the duck race takes place, the annual highlight for children and families.
