Free district festival in the Glückauf Schaffrath allotment garden complex — one of five district festivals in 2026 under the IGA 2027 motto
The Bezirksfeste (district festivals) are a hallmark of Gelsenkirchen's neighborhood culture: throughout the year, the city hosts a free open-air festival in each of its various districts, spotlighting the local club scene, sports offerings, dance groups, and citizens' initiatives. In 2026, five district festivals are planned — spread across the West, Mitte, Süd, Nord, and Ost districts — and together they are united under the thematic focus IGA 2027 (International Garden Exhibition).
The Bezirksfest West will take place on Saturday, May 16, and Sunday, May 17, 2026, in the KGV Glückauf Schaffrath allotment garden complex on Giebelstraße in the Gelsenkirchen-West district. The choice of location is programmatic — an allotment garden complex as the venue refers to the IGA theme 'Garden, Greenery, Urban Nature'.
The International Garden Exhibition 2027 (IGA) will be a significant event for the entire Ruhr area — spread across several locations, including Gelsenkirchen, along with the Rheinpark Duisburg, the Nordsternpark Gelsenkirchen, and the Emscher renaturation project. Gelsenkirchen's district festivals in 2026 serve as a prelude to the IGA, familiarizing the public with the themes of gardens, urban nature, and green space development. The Bezirksfest West particularly embodies this message, as the festival takes place in an allotment garden complex, itself an example of urban greenery.
The West district comprises the Gelsenkirchen neighborhoods of Heßler, Horst, Beckhausen, and Schaffrath — part of the mining settlements on the western edge of the city. Schaffrath is a typical working-class district with a mining past, now home to a diverse population with a strong club life. The district festival makes this diversity visible and anchors the district's cultural identity in the public sphere.
The Bezirksfest West is one of five district festivals taking place in Gelsenkirchen throughout 2026. Each district gets its own festival, supported by local actors and coordinated by the city. Dates and locations of the other district festivals (Mitte, Süd, Nord, Ost) will be announced on Gelsenkirchen's cultural channels.
The Bezirksfest West 2026 brings the club scene, sports groups, and cultural offerings of the Gelsenkirchen-West district into the public space — at the Glückauf Schaffrath allotment garden complex, which thematically aligns with the IGA 2027 focus. A district festival that makes neighborhood culture visible.
