Scandinavian Christmas Village by the Castle
Most Hamburg Christmas markets follow a classic North German model: wooden stalls, mulled wine, bratwurst, fairground attractions. For years, the Bergedorfer Weihnachtsmarkt has opted for a different aesthetic – Scandinavian, with red wooden huts and white fairy lights, and a more streamlined program. The result is a market that is less like a Volksfest (public festival) and more reminiscent of a Nordic Christmas village.
The setting is Johann-Adolf-Hasse-Platz, overlooking Bergedorf Castle – Hamburg's only surviving castle, a 13th-century moated castle that now houses the Bergedorf Museum. The combination of the historic townscape and the Scandinavian market atmosphere is what gives the festival its charm. Those visiting with children can combine a market visit with a trip to the castle.
Over fifty stalls sell arts and crafts, jewelry, toys, clothing, and gifts; alongside these are food stalls offering Hamburg specialties, mulled wine, hot chocolate, and snacks. A small ice rink is usually present on the square, along with a children's carousel and stage performances on weekends. Extended opening hours on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays (until 10 PM).
Bergedorf-Zentrum is the historic and administrative heart of Hamburg's easternmost district. Schloss-Platz is a short walk from the Bergedorf S-Bahn station, in the shadow of St. Petri and Pauli Church and the pedestrian zone at Sachsentor. The neighborhood is festively illuminated during Advent – the market is part of a Christmas program coordinated by the district office.
The market operates on the square in front of the castle for over five weeks. On weekdays, the market starts in the late morning and runs into the early evening, with extended hours until 10 PM on Wednesdays through Saturdays. This makes the market a popular meeting spot after work.
The program will be published on the website in the weeks leading up to the market's start. Traditionally, weekends feature performances by local choirs, brass ensembles, and children's programs in an Advent style. The close connection with Bergedorf Castle and the neighboring district museum makes the market an integral part of the Bergedorf pre-Christmas season.
