Traditional town festival and fair in the district town of Pinneberg
The Stoppelmarkt is a North German festival tradition rooted in agricultural history: in late summer, after the grain harvest was completed — when the “stubble” stood in the fields — a market was held in the village or small town, combining the end of the harvest with a livestock market. Over the 19th and 20th centuries, this economic tradition evolved into a fair with rides, showmen, and a stage program — the modern Barmstedter Stoppelmarkt.
The festival takes over the entire town center of Barmstedt — market square, pedestrian zone, side streets. Showmen from all over Schleswig-Holstein bring carousels, a Ferris wheel, bumper cars, a chain carousel, children's carousels, shooting galleries, raffles, food, and drink stalls. An open-air stage in the town center features a varied program every day: cover bands, Schlager music, regional acts.
The Stoppelmarkt is designed as a family festival — with children's carousels, pony rides, child-friendly food, and a dedicated Bürgerfest (citizens' festival) day on Sunday. The Schleswig-Holstein Showmen's Association e.V. is an organizational partner and assembles the market vendors.
Barmstedt is a town with around 10,500 inhabitants in the Pinneberg district (Schleswig-Holstein), northwest of Hamburg. The town was historically the seat of the Rantzau office and boasts the Schloss Barmstedt (now integrated into Krückaupark) as a significant architectural monument. With its A23 motorway connection, Barmstedt is an important commuter town for Hamburg in the surrounding commuter belt — the Stoppelmarkt is one of the few festivals that annually makes the town's rural, pre-industrial identity visible.
The 2026 town festival took place from August 22 to 24 in the town center of Barmstedt. From the market square, the festival extended into the pedestrian zone and side streets with rides, food and drink stalls, and stage performances.
As in previous years, family carousels, a Ferris wheel, bumper cars, a chain carousel, and smaller rides characterized the townscape. The open-air stage in the town center featured cover bands, Schlager acts, and regional artists. Sunday was traditionally designed as a citizens' festival and family day.
