Family festival to close the season of the Weißensee open-air stage — stage program, dance, and hands-on activities by the Weiße See
The Weiße See is a natural glacial lake in the Weißensee district (Pankow borough). It gives the entire neighborhood its name — historically an independent village, it was only incorporated into Greater Berlin in 1920. The lake and the surrounding Park am Weißen See have been a central recreational area for East Berlin and Pankow since the late 19th century. Directly on the water is the open-air stage, an open-air venue built in 1956 during the GDR era, which today functions as the district's central cultural hub.
From May to September, the Freilichtbühne Weißensee hosts a full summer of culture with concerts, theater, readings, cinema, and family festivals. The Kiezfest traditionally marks the festive conclusion of this season — a fusion of stage culture and neighborhood engagement. The festival is organized by Weißensee-Kultur with the open-air stage, coordinated with local youth, cultural, and social institutions as well as independent organizations from the neighborhood.
The Kiezfest 2026 runs during the day from approximately 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. (pattern of previous years, 2025: 1–6 p.m.). On the open-air stage, music groups, dance projects, and performances alternate. Around the stage, hands-on booths from local associations, initiatives, and schools are set up — craft activities, sports games, introductory theater workshops, information booths from social organizations. It is explicitly not a commercial consumption festival, but a community format intended to showcase the diversity of the district.
The Pankow borough has a strong tradition of Kiezfeste — neighborhood festivals, usually organized jointly by the district office, local organizations, and resident initiatives. Over 20 such events take place annually throughout the borough, from Prenzlauer Berg to Pankow and Buch. The Kiezfest am Weißen See stands out due to its integration with the open-air stage and its prime location by the water.
The 2026 Kiezfest is a fixture in the Pankow event calendar as the annual season finale for the Weißensee open-air stage. The specific date confirmation will follow in summer 2026, but the pattern of previous years suggests Sunday, September 27. On the open-air stage, music groups, dance projects, and performances will alternate; around the stage, hands-on stalls from local associations, initiatives, and schools will be set up.
