Fête de la Musique on June 21, 2026 in the Historic Council Hall Speyer — World Music Day format as part of the town twinning with Chartres
The Fête de la Musique was launched in 1982 in Paris by the then French Minister of Culture Jack Lang. The idea: on a single day — June 21, the day of the summer solstice — free music should be played everywhere in the city. Amateurs and professionals should perform together, all styles should be represented, and access should be free for everyone. The format was an immediate success and has since spread to hundreds of cities in over 120 countries worldwide.
Speyer has been part of this international tradition for years. Unlike in larger cities, where the format takes place decentrally on many stages in public spaces, the Speyer edition focuses on a central venue — the Historic Council Hall. This concentration corresponds to the manageable scale of the cathedral city and allows for a curated program.
The Speyer Fête de la Musique is organized as part of the town twinning with Chartres. Chartres in France has been Speyer's French partner city for decades — like Speyer, Chartres also has a famous Gothic cathedral that is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The cultural ties are actively maintained through the Fête de la Musique and other events.
The Historic Council Hall Speyer is one of the city's most representative rooms — a meeting place for the city council for centuries, and at the same time a concert hall for classical and chamber music events. The wood paneling, the historic wall paintings, and the acoustic properties of the room make it an ideal venue for intimate concert formats.
In the broader timeframe, the city of Speyer organizes another event in the Historic Council Hall for the French National Day (July 14). These two dates — June 21 Fête de la Musique and July 14 Bastille Day — together form the Franco-German summer link of the Speyer town twinning.
The Speyer edition of the Fête de la Musique focuses on the Historic Council Hall as the central venue. The complete program will be published by the city of Speyer shortly before the date.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in early summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years.
