Four Days of Shooting Tradition at the Foot of the Harz Mountains

Abbenrode is a district of the Nordharz municipality in the Harz district — nestled between Wernigerode and Goslar, on the northern edge of the Harz Mountains. As in many villages in the Harz foothills, the annual Schützenfest is the undisputed highlight of club life here. From Friday to Monday, the festival grounds transform into a celebration arena: king's shoot, festival parade, dance evenings, morning pint with brass music — the classic program of a North German-influenced Schützenfest.

The event is organized by the Schützenverein Abbenrode, which is deeply rooted in the village community with a long tradition. The members prepare the festival themselves — from setting up the marquee to catering for guests. Anyone who knows Abbenrode knows that the Schützenfest here is not just a club festival, but a meeting point for the entire community and surrounding area. Across several generations.

Saxony-Anhalt's Shooting Culture in the Nordharz

The Nordharz municipality in the state of Saxony-Anhalt extends over several districts, all of which maintain their own shooting clubs — Langeln, Veckenstedt, Stapelburg, Schmatzfeld, Wasserleben, Heudeber. Abbenrode joins this rich shooting culture. Pentecost is traditionally the preferred date in the Nordharz, as it automatically creates a long weekend. However, the Schützenfest Abbenrode 2026, from June 5th to 8th, falls after Pentecost — an additional summer weekend date that allows enough distance from Hergisdorf's Dreckschweinfest and other Pentecost traditions.
