Multi-day Schützenfest (shooting festival) on Ascension Day at the Hoogstede Schützenplatz (shooting grounds)
Hoogstede is among the communities in the Niedergrafschaft Bentheim region that traditionally hold their Schützenfest on Ascension Day. The public holiday in late May is embedded in a multi-day celebration that shapes club life and the village community.
The Hoogstede Schützenplatz is a traditional festival meadow used by the club for its Schützenfest. A festival tent, shooting range, festival meadow, and assembly area provide space for several hundred participants and guests.
The bird shooting is the highlight of every Schützenfest. The new shooting king emerges from this competition, is proclaimed with his queen, and is the focus of the king's banquet in the evening. A king's chain and insignia accompany the office.
A festive parade leads the marksmen in full uniform through Hoogstede. Dance evenings with live music in the festival tent, a family day with a children's program, and the traditional Frühschoppen complete the schedule of the multi-day festival.
In small communities like Hoogstede, the annual Schützenfest is more than just a Volksfest (popular festival): it is a club festival, a family festival, a village memory, and living tradition all at once. Many families have celebrated here for generations.
With its Schützenfest, Hoogstede preserves one of the central traditional customs of the Niedergrafschaft Bentheim region.
The complete 2026 program will be published by the shooting club on schuetzenverein-hoogstede.de.
