Medieval times on the Rantzau Castle Island
The Rantzau Castle Island is one of Northern Germany's most unusual settings for a medieval market. Located in the middle of Rantzau Lake, accessible only by a bridge, it houses the 17th-century Rantzau Castle, which today serves as a cultural center with a museum and gallery. When the stalls are set up on the last weekend of April 2026, the present disappears behind canvases, wooden booths, and pavilions – a self-contained historical world emerges on the water.
What sets the Barmstedt market apart from many similar events is the density of experiences. Nobles, Vikings, beggars, jesters, and magicians mingle with visitors. Swordsmen demonstrate historical martial arts, blacksmiths forge nails and knives before the guests' eyes, and in the camp tents, one can observe how mercenaries and pilgrims lived and slept between the centuries.
Live performances by the "Devil's Violinist" Nikkijara and the group Hayets Fenor provide the acoustic accompaniment – historical folk music with hurdy-gurdy, violin, drum, and shawm. Medieval cuisine is prepared at the food stalls: suckling pig, kettle soups, bread from a clay oven, and mead made from honey. A historical carriage ride completes the spectacle.
The castle was built in 1648 by Christian von Rantzau and is one of Schleswig-Holstein's most beautiful baroque buildings. Today, it houses the Barmstedt Local History Museum and the town's art gallery. The museum is also open during the market – a welcome connection between authentic history and medieval reenactment.
The 16th edition of the market takes place on the weekend of April 25th/26th, 2026 – as always on the Rantzau Castle Island in Rantzau Lake, right in the heart of the district town of Barmstedt. Saturday, the market opens at 11 AM and runs "open end," on Sunday from 10 AM to 6 PM.
Rantzau Castle, with its museum and gallery, is also open during the market.
Swordsmen in authentic armor will perform fights several times a day – usually in the late morning and late afternoon. The organizer will announce exact times on the organizer's website.
