Specialty Salzkuchen from the mobile wood-fired oven
On Sunday, May 17, 2026, the Musikverein Ruppertshofen invites you to the 36th Backofenfest at the Jägerfeld Culture and Sports Center. The festival's specialty is Salzkuchen — a typical Swabian yeast pastry baked in a mobile wood-fired oven directly on site. Visitors to the festival can experience the baking live and receive the freshly baked Salzkuchen directly from the master baker — a sensory experience that no supermarket Salzkuchen can offer.
The festival runs from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM — a typical Swabian Frühschoppen format. The Musikverein Ruppertshofen will play brass music during the festival — classics from the Swabian repertoire, marches, polkas, waltzes. Refreshments will be served with beer, wine, and non-alcoholic drinks. A compact, cozy event that showcases the club life of Ruppertshofen.
For decades, the Musikverein Ruppertshofen has been the organizer of the Backofenfest and an important player in the cultural life of the small Ostalbkreis municipality. With around 30 active musicians, a youth band, and student training, the club shapes the musical profile of Ruppertshofen. The proceeds from the Backofenfest finance a significant part of the club's activities.
Salzkuchen is a Swabian specialty — a flat-baked yeast pastry with salt, caraway seeds, or poppy seeds on top. Contrary to its name, Salzkuchen is not a sweet cake but a savory pastry traditionally eaten with beer or wine. In the Swabian Gmünd / Ostalb region, Salzkuchen has a special significance and is served at festivals and community events. At the Backofenfest in Ruppertshofen, it is prepared according to a traditional recipe.
Ruppertshofen, a municipality with around 2,100 inhabitants in the Ostalbkreis, is located in the Welzheimer Wald between Schwäbisch Gmünd and Schorndorf. The Jägerfeld Culture and Sports Center is the central community building where several local clubs hold their events. The rural profile of the municipality, the intact village structure, and the active club life make the Backofenfest and similar events important social occasions of the year.
On Sunday, May 17, 2026, from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM, the Musikverein Ruppertshofen invites you to the traditional Backofenfest. The mobile oven unit will be set up directly in front of the Jägerfeld Culture and Sports Center — and during the three hours of the festival, the oven team of the Musikverein will bake fresh Salzkuchen, which will be served directly from the oven.
Concurrently, the Grand Orchestra of the Musikverein will play Frühschoppen — classics from the Swabian brass music repertoire, polkas, marches, and occasionally more modern pieces. Beer, wine, and non-alcoholic drinks will be served. A compact festival that highlights the strengths of Swabian club life: good food, good music, good conversation — all in a relaxed Sunday morning atmosphere.
