Giant kites, stunt kites, and cartoon characters on Germany's widest North Sea beach
The Kite Festival in SPO is one of the most well-known events of its kind in Northern Germany. Professionals and hobby kite flyers from Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands travel every year to fly their oversized kites (some up to 20 meters wingspan), stunt kites, unique creations, and characters from popular cartoons over the wide sandy beach. The spectacle is both silent and impressive: where beach volleyball or sand yachts usually dominate, giant squid, whales, and octopuses glide through the sky this weekend.
A flying school is available on the festival grounds: those who want to get started or improve their stunt kite skills can receive advice without prior registration. Aerosculptures and ground animations — fabric panels, kites breathing in the breeze — also invite visitors to linger. There are play areas for the little ones and seating lounges for the adults.
St. Peter-Ording is located on the Eiderstedt peninsula in the North Friesland district of Schleswig-Holstein. The beach is over twelve kilometers long and up to two kilometers wide in places — the ideal location for wind and kite events. The Ording district also offers the advantage of an event area in the rear beach zone, protected from saltwater.
Three days of family atmosphere, free for guests with a spa card. Day-trippers come from Hamburg, Bremen, Kiel, and Husum. Strollers on the North Sea promenade also take the opportunity to stop by. Food is available from snack stands and the SPO beach bars — bratwurst, fish rolls, crêpes, ice cream.
As in previous years, the Kite Festival will attract oversized kites, stunt kites, and aerosculptures from all over Northern Germany and Scandinavia. The date on the last weekend of June is a tradition and takes advantage of the usually consistent breeze conditions on the North Sea.
The detailed program for 2026 — workshops, kite shows, show segments with professional performers — will be announced shortly before the event on the official tourism website st-peter-ording.de.
By train from Hamburg via Husum to St. Peter-Ording (NOB), then take a bus from the station to the Ordinger Strand car park. By car via the B5, follow signs for Ordinger Strand.

Best kite flying conditions are usually in the morning and late afternoon — wind and sun position make the difference.
