World's largest kiteboarding event on St. Peter-Ording beach — five days of competition, expo, and festival
Ordinger Beach near St. Peter-Ording, with its vastness, consistent westerly winds, and shallow waters, is one of Europe's best kiteboarding spots. During the Pentecost "Summer Opening" season, the sea is already populated by kitesurfers — the California Kitesurf Masters in mid-August intensify this picture into a world-class stage: pro athletes from 30+ nations jump, spin, and glide over the sandbanks and the surf spot off the beach.
In 2026, the GKA Youth Kite World Championship will be part of the program for the second time — an international professional youth format that brings together talent from all over the world. This establishes St. Peter-Ording as a global location for junior kite sports.
Parallel to the competitions, the Kite Expo takes place — described by the organizers as the largest of its kind in the world. All leading brands exhibit, from kites and boards to wetsuits and safety equipment. Anyone looking to buy or test will find everything the industry offers here in one weekend.
The festival is more than just sports: during the day, there are yoga sessions, food trucks, skate sessions, and surfer talks; in the evenings, concerts, DJ sets, and a party program until the early morning hours on Friday and Saturday. The König Pilsener Music Contest plays on the stage — a platform for emerging bands from Northern Germany. Admission to the entire grounds is free.
Choppy Water GmbH, based in Stein near Eckernförde, is an organizer specializing in water sports events. In addition to the California Kitesurf Masters in St. Peter-Ording, the company organizes other international competitions on Sylt and the Baltic Sea. The "California" format serves as a brand umbrella for a series of surf sports events along the North Sea coast.
Over 90,000 visitors are expected for the five-day event — a well-established major Pentecost summer event with clear daily schedules. Admission to the entire festival grounds is free. Through the festival website, organizers provide information on accommodation, travel options, beach parking, and wind forecasts.
