14th Düsseldorf Festival — Theatre, Dance, Music, and Art from over 12 Countries
From July 15 to August 2, 2026, Düsseldorf will transform into a stage for contemporary international performance art for 19 days: the 14th edition of the asphalt Festival brings 28 productions from over twelve countries in over 70 performances to six venues spread across the city. One of the most important summer festivals for contemporary theatre, dance, music, and visual arts in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The festival consciously works with a polycentric approach, featuring six main venues in different city districts:
For years, the festival has positioned itself as an interface between international avant-garde acts and the local Düsseldorf art scene. The 2026 edition brings together guests from more than twelve countries:
The asphalt Festival was launched in 2013 — as an initiative for contemporary stage art that lacked a summer festival home in Düsseldorf until then. Over 14 years, it has developed into a fixture in the NRW cultural landscape and has built a networked scene with other major city district festivals such as the Theater Biennale Mülheim, PACT Zollverein Essen, and RUHRtriennale Bochum/Essen/Duisburg.
The state capital Düsseldorf, with its approximately 631,000 inhabitants, is home to several important stages — from the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus (D'haus) to the Tonhalle, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the Forum Freies Theater, and Tanzhaus NRW. The asphalt Festival curates within this established infrastructure and brings international guests into spaces typically occupied by repertoire productions.
The 14th edition of the asphalt Festival presents 19 days of international avant-garde stage art in Düsseldorf. Six venues spread across the entire city, a polycentric concept as a conscious counterpoint to the festival-campus model. International acts meet local stage infrastructure. Focuses for 2026: Iran, Ukraine, USA, Argentina, and Great Britain as programmatic focal points.
Sasha Marianna Salzmann speaks at the opening on „Art During Wartime" — the German-Russian author as a programmatic voice.
Tickets for each production via the festival website, prices typically €10-€50. Festival passes and multi-ticket options with discounts. Some productions like Florentina Holzinger's 2026 music production are already sold out.
Public Transport: All six venues are easily accessible by Rheinbahn (subway/tram/bus). The festival strongly recommends „bus & train, bicycle, or walking" — sustainability is part of the festival's profile. By Car: Parking garages at the respective venues (D'haus, KIT with Q-Park Apollo, Alte Farbwerke with paid parking on-site).
Tickets for each production are available via the festival website asphalt-festival.de. Festival passes and multi-ticket options offer discounts for frequent visitors.
Due to the six venues: check the addresses on the festival website in advance and plan your travel. Urban space productions like „TAXI DRIVERS" require specific meeting points.
For first-time visitors: start with an opening or classical performance at D'haus or KIT. Those who appreciate experimental stage art should experience the urban space productions — they are what sets the asphalt Festival apart from regular theatre series.
