About Ärappelfest Mettingen
Ärappelfest Mettingen — edition 2026
Ärappelfest 2026
The 2026 edition falls on the last Sunday of September — the classic date after the potato harvest in Münsterland. Sunday shopping, potato specialties, and a family program are the three pillars of the day's program.
As every year, Mettingen's school classes liven up the festival with their potato competitions — potato races, potato throwing, potato peeling against the clock. The children's flea market provides a stage for Mettingen's children to showcase their own sales stalls. Regional live bands play on the market stage, and the mayor arrives in the town center on a decorated tractor.

Mettingen in the Tecklenburger Land
Mettingen is a municipality in the Steinfurt district (Münster administrative region), located in the Tecklenburger Land north of the Teutoburg Forest, with around 12,000 inhabitants. Shaped by an unusual history: the "Tüötten" — traveling merchants from Mettingen who moved to Holland from the 17th century onwards and became rich there as linen traders — have shaped the town's appearance with magnificent townhouses and farms. Today, Mettingen is a prosperous rural community with an active tourism and club structure. The Ärappelfest is one of its most important annual festivals.
"Ärappel" — the Westphalian Potato
The name of the festival is explained by the Tecklenburger Plattdeutsch: "Ärappel" is the regional form of "Erdapfel" — which means potato in High German. The festival was launched as a harvest festival after the potato harvest and pays homage to the fruit that is historically and culinarily central to Münsterland agriculture. The festival, mainly held on a Sunday in September, also reflects this agricultural tradition — when the early potatoes have long been harvested and the late varieties are just being harvested.
Program on Sunday Shopping Day
The Ärappelfest combines three elements: Sunday shopping (Mettingen shops are open from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.), culinary potato specialties (Reibekuchen, Bratkartoffeln, Kartoffelpuffer, gefüllte Pellkartoffeln, Kartoffelsuppe at various stalls around the market streets), and a family program with numerous attractions. Particularly popular: Potato games for Mettingen schools, where classes compete against each other in potato-related competitions — potato races, potato throwing, potato peeling against the clock.
Children's Flea Market and Live Music
Another classic is the children's flea market: children sell discarded toys, books, and clothes at their own stalls — a good exercise in independent action and handling money. Live music on the market stage (regional bands, often with Münsterland repertoire), carousels for the youngest visitors, and fairground food stalls complete the picture.
Mettingen's Mayor on a Tractor
A Mettingen specialty: traditionally, the mayor drives into the town center on a decorated tractor for the Ärappelfest — a gesture that symbolically underscores the festival's agricultural and down-to-earth character. Local farmers are also present with demonstrations of old and new harvesting technology.
Getting to Mettingen
By car via the A 30 (Tecklenburg exit) or B 219 — parking around the town center. By public transport: bus lines from Ibbenbüren or Rheine to Mettingen Market. About 25 minutes by car from Osnabrück, about 50 minutes from Münster. Mettingen is well integrated into the Tecklenburger Land tourist region — a detour to the Tüötten Museum or the nearby town center of Tecklenburg is worthwhile before or after the festival.
