Mettingen's Late Summer Tradition
With the Herbstkirmes (autumn funfair), Mettingen bids farewell to summer and the school holidays every year. Directly around the church in the town centre, the community sets up a tried-and-tested funfair programme for three days: rides, stalls, showmen, and catering. In 2026, the Kirmes runs from August 28th to 30th.
Rides in the Town Centre
The classics are available every year: dodgems, music express, whip, and several children's carousels. In addition, there are stalls with roasted almonds, candy floss, bratwurst, fries, crêpes, ice cream, popcorn, and everything else that belongs at a good funfair. The atmosphere is familiar and charmingly traditional — typical for the Tecklenburger Land region.
Opening Saturday at 5:30 PM
The official opening takes place on Saturday at 5:30 PM — with a small raffle. Vouchers for the raffle are distributed from 3 PM directly on the festival grounds — those who arrive early secure their participation.
Family Day on Monday
Monday is Family Day. Thanks to the vouchers distributed at the Saturday opening, there are reduced prices on many rides and stalls. For families with children from Mettingen, Westerkappeln, Recke, and the region, this is a welcome event at the end of the summer holidays — relaxed, less crowded than the weekend hustle and bustle, and cheaper.
Mettingen in the Tecklenburger Land
Mettingen is located in the Steinfurt district in North Rhine-Westphalia, in the Tecklenburger Land — a scenically attractive region on the northern edge of the Münsterland with the striking ridge of the Teutoburg Forest to the south. The community is known for the Tüöttenmuseum tradition (travelling merchants from Mettingen who sold fabrics in the Netherlands) and its rural character.
