Four weeks of Advent atmosphere between St. Gumbertus and St. Johannis
The Ansbach Christmas Market is part of the classic tradition of Franconian Advent markets—more modest than the world-famous Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt, but with a more intense and personal atmosphere. The market is located in the middle of Ansbach's historic old town, framed by two of the city's most important sacred buildings: St. Gumbertus with its three towers and the Schwanenritter Chapel, and the St. Johannis Church with the margraves' tomb.
The centerpiece of the market is the historic town hall on Martin-Luther-Platz, which also hosts an accompanying craft exhibition. The range of stalls is broad and solid: mulled wine and punch from its own winery and neighboring vineyards, roasted almonds, bratwurst from an open grill, Franconian gingerbread, stollen, chocolate, and regional cheese. Alongside these are handicrafts: glassblowers, woodcarvers, potters, wool merchants, and jewelers. The large Christmas pyramid in the square is the ultimate meeting point.
Ansbach has a long tradition as a market and residential city. Seasonal markets have taken place here since the Middle Ages; the format of today's Christmas market dates back to the tradition of the Franconian Christkindlesmarkt. For years, the city has focused on an authentic market appearance—little plastic, lots of crafts, regional exhibitors, and economic partners. The market remains manageable (around 50 stalls), which is part of its charm: no consumer frenzy, but Advent atmosphere.
Ansbach is the district capital of Middle Franconia with about 40,000 inhabitants, formerly the residence of the Margraves of Brandenburg-Ansbach. The old town is characterized by Baroque architecture, the Margrave's Castle, and several important churches. The Christmas market is part of an Advent program that complements other events in Ansbach, such as the Bach Week, the Margrave Days, and the Ansbach Rococo Festivals.
The 2026 Christmas Market follows the city of Ansbach's proven approach: around 50 stalls, with a focus on Franconian specialties, an accompanying craft exhibition in the town hall, and concerts and performances by Franconian choirs and music associations on individual Advent weekends on the market stage.
Four weeks in duration, centrally located in the old town, with a personal character — the Ansbach Christmas Market is one of Middle Franconia's most attractive Advent formats for visitors seeking an authentic market experience away from the very large Christmas markets.
