About International Days Ingelheim

The International Days Ingelheim are one of the most traditional exhibition series in Rhineland-Palatinate. Since 1959, the Kunstforum Ingelheim, supported and funded by Boehringer Ingelheim, has dedicated a major exhibition each year to an international art theme. The 2026 edition focuses on two artists: the American-British painter, etcher, and lithographer James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903) and the contemporary Japanese-German photographic artist Hiroyuki Masuyama. From April 26 to July 5, 2026, the Kunstforum in the Altes Rathaus will showcase around 125 works by both artists – an exceptional dialogue between historical printmaking and contemporary photographic art. An extensive accompanying program with guided tours, workshops, lectures, and the "Day & Night of Art" event opens the exhibition to a broad audience.

Whistler & Masuyama – Dialogue Between Two Artists

The 2026 exhibition focuses on two artists:

  • James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903), the American-British painter, etcher, and lithographer, one of the most important representatives of the "Aesthetic Movement". Whistler revolutionized 19th-century art with his nocturnes and subtle printing techniques.
  • Hiroyuki Masuyama, the contemporary Japanese-German photographic artist, known for his image landscapes composed of numerous individual photographs, which quote and reinterpret historical models.

Around 125 Works

The exhibition features around 125 works by both artists: etchings and lithographs by Whistler, and large-format photographs by Masuyama. The dialogue makes historical and contemporary image-making processes tangible.

Boehringer Ingelheim Sponsorship

The event is supported and funded by the pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim, which has its headquarters in the city. It has been the company's most important cultural initiative since 1959. The International Days are considered a flagship for the connection between business and art in Germany.

Kunstforum Ingelheim – Altes Rathaus

The venue is the Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall) in Ingelheim, which is used as Kunstforum Ingelheim after extensive renovation. The historic building offers a special atmosphere for the annual exhibition.

Accompanying Program

Accompanying the exhibition, there will be guided tours, workshops, lectures, and the major event Day & Night of Art, which immerses the exhibition in a special atmosphere.
