Baroque market activity in Ansbach's Old Town on three Saturdays — Margravial court, historical dances, and fencing art for the 75th anniversary of the Rococo Festival
Ansbach is an independent city in the Middle Franconia administrative region and former residence of the Margraves of Brandenburg-Ansbach. The Ansbach Rococo Festival has been reviving the courtly life of the 18th century against the baroque backdrop of the old town since 1951. In 2026, it celebrates its 75th anniversary — in a special format titled Market Whispers in the Old Town.
Instead of a large festival weekend, the 2026 anniversary format is spread over three Saturdays, each from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. During the market activity, the historical era strolls through the baroque old town: The Margravial court with the Margravine and retinue, soldiers, fencing masters, and dancers in authentic Rococo costumes populate the alleys. A hint of powder and perfume fills the air.
The scenes are spread across prominent locations in Ansbach's old town: Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Platz, Uzstraße, Neustadt, and Herrieder Tor. Thus, the baroque market activity forms a circuit through the historic center, combining courtly scenes with the weekend market bustle.
The Ansbach Rococo Festival was added to the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Bavaria in April 2026 — a recognition of over 70 years of tradition in living historical reenactment. The 2026 Market Whispers format is the anniversary edition; the classic Rococo Festival with a grand program returns in 2027.
With the Margravial Residence, Court Garden, and Orangery, Ansbach is one of the most beautiful baroque cities in Franconia. The Rococo Market Whispers make the history of the Margravial era directly tangible and are a tourist highlight of the city in western Middle Franconia. Admission is free.
For the 75th anniversary in 2026, the Ansbach Rococo Festival presents itself as Market Whispers in the Old Town on three Saturdays: May 23, June 20, and July 18, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Margravial court, soldiers, fencing masters, and dancers in authentic Rococo costumes bring the baroque old town to life at Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Platz, Uzstraße, Neustadt, and Herrieder Tor. Admission is free. The classic Rococo Festival returns in 2027.
