Autumn Volksfest of the Upper Palatinate with beer tent, rides and market
Amberg in the Upper Palatinate maintains an old Dult tradition: Twice a year, the Dultplatz in the city area transforms into a large festival site — once at Whitsun, and once in autumn around Michaelmas (September 29). The Michaeli-Dult is traditionally the more extensive version, running for ten days from the end of September to the beginning of October.
At the center is the large festival tent run by the Gschrey family. Specially brewed Amberger Festbier is served; on the plates, you'll find Bratl (roast pork), Hax'n (pork knuckle), duck, half chickens, pretzels, and Steckerlfisch (grilled fish on a stick). Live bands provide musical entertainment every evening, and during the day on weekends.
Around the festival tent, market stalls offer household goods, leather goods, sweets, roasted almonds, and gingerbread hearts. The amusement area features a balanced mix of classic rides (bumper cars, Ferris wheel, chain carousel, children's carousel) and modern high-speed attractions, along with shooting galleries, lottery stalls, and grab bags.
A firm trademark of the Michaeli-Dult are the fireworks on Friday evenings, which bathe the festival grounds in spectacular color. To conclude, the last Sunday features a Sunday with open shops in Amberg's city center — the Dult visit and city stroll combine on this day for a great family outing for the entire region.
Amberg is located on the edge of the Upper Palatinate hill country on the Vils river and is the seat of an independent district. The Dult attracts visitors from the entire Amberg-Sulzbach district as well as from the neighboring districts of Schwandorf and Neumarkt i.d.OPf. — with regular hosts and showmen, many of whom have been coming for generations.
The 2026 edition follows the classic Dult rhythm: Opening on Friday, September 25, with the beer tapping ceremony and the entry of the hosts and hostess. Festival operations run daily until Sunday, October 4; on weekdays, the tent opens in the late afternoon, and on weekends, it opens for the Frühschoppen (morning pint).
The fireworks displays are scheduled for both Friday evenings (September 25 and October 2). The complete band program and the exact list of rides will be published by the organizer Amberger Congress Marketing in the weeks before the Dult on acc-amberg.de.
Amberg is located on the A6 (exit Amberg-West/Ost) and on the railway line Regensburg–Hof, which is not an ICE line but is well-connected. From the train station, the Dultplatz can be reached on foot in approx. 15 minutes or by city bus. Parking is available in the immediate vicinity; on festival weekends, arriving by train or Park & Ride is recommended.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Rides and food are at usual Volksfest prices. Reservations in the festival tent are recommended on weekends.
The fireworks take place on both Friday evenings during the Dult — times are published by the organizer (usually around 10:00 PM).
