Esens and the Bear

The nickname „Bärenstadt“ (Bear Town) is one of the unofficial identifiers of the East Frisian small town of Esens. A bear is depicted in the town's coat of arms, and the nickname „Bärenstädter“ (Bear Town residents) is worn with pride by the inhabitants. The town festival „Esens trifft sich“ (Esens meets) plays with this identity-forming term: Under the motto „Bärenstädter kommen zusammen“ (Bear Town residents come together), the event gathers the citizens for a convivial evening once a year.

By the Arcades – A Central Stage

The venue is the area by the Arcades – a central square in Esens' town centre with historical charm. The Arcades form the natural backdrop for the civic festival; short distances and an intimate atmosphere are guaranteed. On Friday, August 28, 2026, from 6 PM to 11:30 PM, the square becomes the stage for a late summer gathering.

The festival is organised by AEU Esens (Allgemeine Einkaufs- und Werbegemeinschaft – General Shopping and Advertising Association). This places „Esens trifft sich“ within a series of events that enliven the Esens town centre with various formats – from the Schnüstermarkt (craft market) in spring, to the cabaret festival, the town festival, and the Schützenfest (marksmen's festival) weeks.
