Schulkirche and Summer Concert Tradition

The Schulkirche in Amberg's historic old town — officially Maria-Hilf-Kirche, located on Deutsche Schulgasse — is one of the lesser-known but artistically valuable sacred buildings in Eastern Bavaria. The baroque interior with its ornate ceiling design and well-preserved organ offers an intimate, excellent acoustic for solo organ concerts. Since 2012 — for 15 years now — the Amberger Orgelmusik association has been using the space for its summer concert series.

Format: 30 Minutes, Every Saturday

The concept is unusually compact: On every Saturday from the end of June to mid-September, an organ concert begins at 12 p.m. and lasts exactly 30 minutes. The short duration makes the concerts ideal for a lunch break during a stroll through the city or as a small cultural moment before the weekend. A total of eleven concerts are offered over the summer months, each with its own program and a different organist at the console.

Organists from All Over the World

The artist program ranges from German cathedral organists and university professors to international guests. In 2026, Prof. Sabine Lahm and Bernhard Müllers will play the opening concert, Istvan Ban from Budapest, Michael Riedel and Jihyun Sophia Kim from Nuremberg's St. Lorenz, Prof. Martin Sturm from Weimar, Prof. Roland Stangier from Essen, and other renowned musicians. The grand finale will be a four-hand organ concert by DKM Christian Heiß and Bernhard Müllers.

Amberg and its Classical Heritage

Amberg, the former ducal residence of the Oberpfalz with around 41,000 inhabitants, is one of Bavaria's best-preserved historic cities. The medieval city wall with its "Stadtbrille" (city glasses) and city gates, the old town with its patrician houses, and the numerous sacred buildings make it a hidden gem for tourists. Amberger Orgelmusik fits into this cultural environment, utilizing one of the city's most beautiful churches for a consciously accessible classical offering.

Amberger Orgelmusik — edition 2026

The 15th season of Amberger Orgelmusik runs from June 27 to September 12, 2026. Eleven 30-minute concerts take place every Saturday at 12 p.m. in the Schulkirche. Organists from Germany and internationally, from university professors to cathedral organists. Free admission.

15th Season in the Schulkirche

From Saturday, June 27, to Saturday, September 12, 2026, the Amberger Orgelmusik association presents its 15th concert season in the Schulkirche at Deutsche Schulgasse 2. A total of eleven concerts, every Saturday at 12 p.m. for exactly 30 minutes — precisely timed summer concerts to immerse yourself in.

The 2026 program features organists from all over Germany — from Nuremberg, Regensburg, Ingolstadt, Weimar, Essen to Amberg — as well as international guests from Budapest. The season concludes on September 12 with a four-hand concert.
