Open-Air Theatre in the Historic Castle Courtyard
The Alzenau Castle Festival is the cultural flagship of the town of Alzenau in the district of Aschaffenburg (Bavaria, Bavarian Lower Main region). The stage is the atmospheric courtyard of Alzenau Castle – a late medieval building that becomes an open-air venue for several summer weeks. In 2026, the performances will take place in the Lower Castle Courtyard; due to savings, there will be no own city productions this season, but the guest performance programme remains broad.
Theatre, Comedy, and Music
The programme combines spoken theatre, comedy, cabaret, children's theatre, and music. Regional groups such as the association kultBurG e.V. Alzenau perform alongside professional touring ensembles from Cologne, Frankfurt, and the region. Tribute shows to Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, and Adele, as well as The Italian Tenors, provide the musical entertainment, while cabaret artists like Wolfgang Krebs and Johannes Scherer ensure the cheerful evenings.
A Festival for the Whole Family
With its own children's theatre (»König Artus«) and youth productions by kultBurGTeens, the festival explicitly caters to families. The Lower Castle Courtyard is accessible via the main entrance. In case of bad weather, performances will take place or be moved to the Räuschberghalle Hörstein – current information is available on alzenau.de and on social media.
Cultural Centre on the Bavarian Lower Main
The organiser is the city of Alzenau. The Castle Festival is a permanent fixture in the cultural calendar of the Bavarian Lower Main region and attracts audiences from the entire Aschaffenburg area, the Kahlgrund, and the neighbouring Rhine-Main region.
Alzenau Castle Festival — edition 2026
From June 12 to July 25, 2026, the Lower Courtyard of Alzenau Castle will be transformed into an open-air stage. This season, there will be no in-house city productions, but a dense programme of guest performances including theatre, comedy, cabaret, children's theatre, and music.
The season opens with the big-city comedy »Linie 1« by kultBurG e.V. Alzenau. Further highlights include the children's play »König Artus«, the crime comedy »Holmes & Watson« (NN Theater Cologne), social comedies by OFF:MAIN Theater and Fliegende Volksbühne, cabaret evenings with Wolfgang Krebs (»Bayern liebt Dich«) and Johannes Scherer, as well as musical tribute shows. Advance ticket sales began on January 16, 2026, via reservix.de.

Getting There
Alzenau is located in the district of Aschaffenburg on the Bavarian Lower Main. By train directly via the Kahlgrundbahn to the Alzenau-Burg stop, from there a few steps to the castle. By car via the A45 (Alzenau exit), parking is available near the castle.

Accessibility
The Lower Castle Courtyard is accessible via the main entrance; the Upper Castle Courtyard is not accessible.
