Early Summer Festival and Open Day of the Volunteer Fire Brigade
When the Ensdorf Volunteer Fire Brigade opens its gates on a Whitsun or early summer weekend, it's not just a community festival – it's also a day to remember the central role that volunteer firefighters play in Saarland communities. Ensdorf, located on the right bank of the Saar river in the Saarlouis district, is one of the communities where the fire service is closely linked to its industrial and mining history.
The concept: On one of the two festival days, the fire station opens its doors to visitors. Fire engines are available for viewing and exploration, the active members of the brigade answer questions, demonstrate technical equipment, and perform drills – from donning breathing apparatus to setting up a water hose. Children can typically try out the water hose, sit in a fire engine, and complete small tasks.
As with many Saarland fire brigade festivals, the food is prepared by the active members and their families. The star is the Schwenker – the traditional Saarland charcoal-grilled steak – alongside bratwurst, fries, salads, coffee, homemade cake, and beer. The proceeds go directly to the community's work, especially the Ensdorf Youth Fire Brigade.
For decades, Ensdorf was one of the most important mining locations in Saarland. The closure of the Duhamel mine in 2012 marked the end of an era, and the community has since actively pursued structural change. The fire brigade festival is one of the vibrant examples of how community life supports the cohesion of a municipality shaped by industrial transformation.
Those extending their festival weekend often combine the visit with a walk along the Saar riverbank or a bike tour on the Saar Cycle Path, which runs directly through the community. The nearby town of Saarlouis (5 km away) with its fortifications is also a popular excursion destination.
The municipality of Ensdorf confirms the date on its official event page. The detailed program will be published a few weeks before the festival on gemeinde-ensdorf.de and on local notice boards.
The final 2026 program will be announced by the municipality and the Ensdorf fire brigade before the festival.
