Open-Air music theatre under the iconic industrial monument — 2026 'West Side Story'
The Saarpolygon is a 30-meter high, walkable steel artwork high on the Duhamel hill in Ensdorf — a monument to the miners of Saarland and their history, erected in 2016. The geometric sculpture, which presents a different image from every perspective, quickly became one of the state's most important landmarks. The fact that this polygon is now becoming a stage for opera festivals is a brilliant idea — and it works.
Open-air art is now created on the spoil heap, once piled high with the waste from Saar mining. This connection between industrial monument and high culture is no coincidence in Saarland — the Völklingen Ironworks, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has been staging major events for years, and the Opernfestspiele am Saarpolygon also follow this tradition. Mining, structural change, culture — everything flows together here.
The first edition of the Opera Festival in 2024 — with a production of 'Carmen' — was a resounding success: all performances were sold out, and audiences and critics were thrilled. For 2026, the festival is daring to present its second edition — and has programmed one of the most famous and beloved musicals/operas of all time, 'West Side Story'.
Leonard Bernstein's 'West Side Story' (1957) is arguably the most famous American musical opera of all time — a Romeo and Juliet story set between rival gangs in New York, uncompromising in its music, critical in its social commentary. The Saarpolygon production in 2026 will unfold on a 300-square-meter stage directly beneath the polygon. Video and light projections will transform the steel artwork into a dynamic stage element — crime scene, skyline, symbol. A 30-piece orchestra will accompany the performance live.
Between August 13 and 30, 2026, 'West Side Story' will be performed twelve times. This manageable number makes each performance an event — tickets are in high demand, and early booking is essential. Performances begin in the evening, as the sun sets behind the hill and the light show can unfold its full effect.
Ensdorf is a municipality in the Saarlouis district, located on the Saar river, about 10 kilometres downstream from Saarbrücken. The former mining community has undergone structural change since the closure of the Duhamel mine in 2012 — and has consciously created a new symbol of identity with the Saarpolygon and the Opera Festival. Anyone who wants to understand Saarland — its mining history, its transformation, its cultural upswing — should spend an evening on the Duhamel hill.
In the summer of 2026, the hill becomes the largest open-air stage in Saarland. The twelve performances are spread over three weeks between August 13 and 30, 2026. Each performance begins late in the evening, as the sun sets behind the hill and the light, video projections, and stage design can unfold their full effect.
The staging, soloists, orchestra, and stage design are under the direction of the artistic team of the Opernfestspiele. Exact performance dates and cast will be published on the official website and can be booked through the ticket shop.
The exact performance dates, cast details, and staging information for 2026 will be communicated on opernfestspiele-saarpolygon.de. Tickets are available through the online shop.
