Traditional club festival of the Altrip Heritage and History Association on the Rhine riverbank
The Altriper Fischerfest commemorates the centuries-old connection of the community of Altrip with the Rhine and fishing. Altrip is one of the oldest settlements on the Rhine – the community dates back to the Roman fortress "Alta Ripa" ("High Bank"), which was built in the 4th century AD to protect the Rhine border of the Roman Empire. This makes Altrip one of the few communities in Germany that can look back on an uninterrupted settlement tradition since late antiquity.
The organizer is the Heimat- und Geschichtsverein Altrip e.V. (HGV Altrip), which has been dedicated to preserving local history and traditions for decades. The association documents Altrip's Roman past, maintains the local history museum, and organizes various events such as the annual Fischerfest. Thus, the festival combines historical preservation with vibrant festival culture.
The Fischerfest honors the historical significance of fishing for Altrip. Until the 20th century, fishing in the Rhine was an important source of income for the people of Altrip. Today, in times of industrialization and water protection, commercial fishing has declined sharply, but the Fischerfest keeps the memory of the maritime tradition alive.
The focus of the festival is freshly grilled and fried fish – trout, salmon, "Backfisch" (fried fish), herring – as well as Palatinate specialties such as "Bratwurst" (grilled sausage), "Saumagen" (pig's stomach stuffed with pork and spices), and "Flammkuchen" (a type of thin-crust pizza). Palatinate wine from local vintners and beer from regional breweries complete the offering. Live music or DJ sets provide the evening's atmosphere.
Altrip belongs to the Rheinauen municipality association, along with Neuhofen, Otterstadt, and Waldsee. The community is located directly on the Rhine opposite Mannheim. With almost 8,000 inhabitants, it is one of the medium-sized local communities in the Rhein-Pfalz district. The Fischerfest is one of the most important summer dates in Altrip's festival calendar and attracts visitors from all over the southern Palatinate.
The 2026 edition continues the tradition as the central summer festival of the oldest settlement community on the Rhine in the Rhein-Pfalz district. The Heimat- und Geschichtsverein Altrip organizes the festival on a voluntary basis and uses the proceeds for the preservation of local history and the local history museum. Thus, the Fischerfest is more than just a summer festival – it is a contribution to the community's culture of remembrance.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in early summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
